Gallery Talk | Made in New York City: The Business of Folk Art: Exhibition Tour

Folk art has flourished in the heart of New York City since the eighteenth century, contrary to popular belief that it was a rural genre that reflected local tastes, traditions, and needs. Around 100 works of art by self-taught artists tell the story about New York City as the center of America’s financial and commercial world from two perspectives simultaneously: “The Art of Business” portrays the people and places that were part of the city’s thrumming commercial life, and “The Business of Art” highlights the diverse mediums and formats used by the artists, artisans, and manufacturers. This tour of the exhibition is conducted by museum gallery guides.

Talk | Exploring Conceptual Photography

Karen Jerzyk’s photos take the mind on colorful journeys through places not often explored. Fueled by a combination of failure and an unrelenting imagination, she has created a world of her own, both figuratively and literally. Her wildly imaginative, hand-built sets play backdrop to stunning visual representations of life as she sees it. This isn’t just another “how to” guide to photography; Jerzyk is going to show you why the only place you need to look for inspiration to produce beautiful, meaningful work is within yourself. She walks through her approach to conceptual photography, using her own life’s events to propel her visions into dynamic art.

This program includes songs and poetry of the Norse and Anglo-Saxon raiders and settlers, the chants of Celtic monks, and songs in the emerging Middle English language, as well as instrumental music of medieval England. Twa Corbies is a medieval music ensemble committed to exploring and performing the ancient music of the British Isles and Scandinavia. They perform this music on historical harps, bagpipes, and lutes, and base their performances in information drawn from medieval sources, including manuscripts, artwork, language, and culture. Party | Traditional English Afternoon Tea

English-style tea, black tea, Pally's rich tea biscuit will be served. "There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea."- Henry James Afternoon tea, that most quintessential of English customs is, perhaps surprisingly, a relatively new tradition. While the custom of drinking tea dates back to the third millennium BC in China and was popularised in England during the 1660s by King Charles II and his wife the Portuguese Infanta Catherine de Braganza, it was not until the mid 19th century that the concept of 'afternoon tea' first appeared. Afternoon tea was introduced in England by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, in the year 1840. The Duchess would become hungry around four o'clock in the afternoon. The evening meal in her household was served fashionably late at eight o'clock, thus leaving a long period of time between lunch and dinner. The Duchess asked that a tray of tea, bread and butter (some time earlier, the Earl of Sandwich had had the idea of putting a filling between two slices of bread) and cake be brought to her room during the late afternoon. This became a habit of hers and she began inviting friends to join her. This pause for tea became a fashionable social event. During the 1880's upper-class and society women would change into long gowns, gloves and hats for their afternoon tea which was usually served in the drawing room between four and five o'clock.

Opening Reception | 2 Art Shows: Tipping Point / Of all the souls that stand create

Ruth Bauer Neustadter's Tipping Point showcases mixed-media paintings and sculptural weavings using fiber, glass, metal and other found objects produce environmentally and politically provocative works. "I believe art is one way to help steer us away from our environmental tipping point." Anne Mondro's Of all the souls that stand create creates intricately woven anatomical sculptures in response to the physical and emotional complexities of the body. Drawn to visual metaphors, she interlaces delicate wire into representations of the body that are structurally strong, yet fragile in appearance and presentation. Working in this manner, she explores the duality of our strength and vulnerability.

Opening Reception | Erin Jane Nelson | Joshua Nathanson: A Photographer and a Painter

Joshua Nathanson’s human-scaled paintings draw from diverse visual sources to bridge digital, physical, and psychological realms. In a multi-valent process of transcription across media, Nathanson uses iPad drawing apps, Photoshop, and inkjet printers to form digital studies of stream-of-consciousness sketches. These studies are then translated again, forming the basis for paintings on canvas aimed at extending the experience of viewing the vibrant studies on-screen. Atlanta-based artist Erin Jane Nelson often works in series; artworks on view draw from photographs the artist took of sites with fraught cultural histories along coastal regions and barrier islands of the Southeast, which are rapidly changing and disappearing due to climate change. These photographs and others of her surroundings and lived experiences throughout her upbringing in the American south serve as starting points for the collaged elements in her sculptures.

Discussion | How Soon Is Now: Art, Activism and Accountability

How Soon Is Now: Art, Activism and Accountability is in response to the growing protests museums are facing and inspired by Artforum's May issue on art and activism. How Soon Is Now brings together artists, activists, critics, and institutional leaders to confront art's responsibility in crises of accountability. How can artists and the systems that support them rise to the occasion? Are museums places of enlightenment, and if so, should they be held to higher standards than other organizations? What is dirty money, and what should be done with it? Can institutions satisfy their baseline missions without compromise? When is art a space for improving the world, and when is it a cover for nefarious activities? Can art do more—or has it done too much already? -- Carin Kuoni, will introduce the conversation with: -- Claire Bishop, Professor of Art History at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York -- Tania Bruguera, artist -- Nan Goldin, artist and activist, founder of P.A.I.N. (Prescription Addiction Intervention Now) -- Tobi Haslett, writer -- Anne Pasternak, the Shelby White and Leon Levy Director of the Brooklyn Museum -- Moderator: David Velasco, Editor of Artforum.

In this modern production, find the community of Messina celebrating a break from an ongoing war. But not all is peaceful amid the revelry, as old rivals engage in a battle of wits, unexpected foes plot revenge, and young lovers are caught in a tumultuous courtship – until love proves the ultimate trickster, and undoes them all.
