Fair | October 7th, 06:29AM: An Immersive Exhibition on Nova Music Festival Massacre

To celebrate the end of his two years of service as a medic in the Israel Defense Forces' paratrooper division, Tomer Meir joined 13 of his friends at the Nova Musica Festival on the weekend of October 6 in Re'im in southern Israel. It was his first ever music festival. "It was the best moments of my life. I can't explain the state we were in," the 21-year-old told the New York Jewish Week. "It was pure love -- people dancing, laughing, smiling. All the good stuff that we're living for." Until 6:29 a.m. on Saturday morning. The red alerts, the rockets and the running. "The music stopped. The rockets started. We started running for our lives," Meir said. Meir is a survivor of the Nova Music Festival Massacre, where Hamas militants killed 364 festival-goers and took at least 40 hotstages on the morning of Oct. 7. Six months after the attack, Meir is in New York sharing his story as part of an interactive exhibit about that day, which he says is helping him heal. The Nova Musical Festival exhibition, titled October 7th, 06:29AM, is an immersive step into what it was like to be at the festival when it was attacked. Screens show clips from the attack on Nova are displayed next to personal and camping items taken from the festival recreating the festival layout. The exhibit, which debuted in Tel Aviv for 10 weeks in December, was created by Israeli designers and cultural producers, many of whom were producers with the Nova Music Festival itself. It was brought to New York with the help of Scooter Braun, the Jewish-American music producer and philanthropist. The exhibit recreates the visuals and sounds of the Nova Music Festival massacre. But the New York version is in some ways "more intense," according to Yael Finkelstein, a volunteer who collected items from the Nova site and helped set up both the Tel Aviv and New York exhibit. New elements at the New York exhibit include dozens of video testimonies from survivors, Zaka volunteers and family members, as well as graphic raw footage taken on Oct. 7 from both festival-goers and Hamas militants. In addition, survivors of the massacre such as Meir and Sassi will be at the exhibit every day to share their stories and answer questions. Their goal, Meir said, is to show New Yorkers that the horror they experienced could happen to anyone.

Master Class | Piano Master Class

Piano Master Class with internationally acclaimed pianist Vladimir Feltsman. This masterclass provides music lovers with a rare opportunity to witness the interaction between gifted Mannes students and a great artist as they examine and explore the craft of performance at the highest level. Vladimir Feltsman was toured extensively through the former Soviet Union, Europe and Japan throughout the 1970s. In 1979, because of his growing discontent with the rigid ideological control and restrictions on artistic freedom, he applied for an exit visa from Soviet Union. In response, he was effectively banned from performing in public until he was finally granted the permission to emigrate from USSR in 1987. His debut recital at Carnegie Hall in 1987 immediately established him as a major pianist on the American and international scene. Since then, he performed with all major American orchestras and appeared on the most prestigious recital series and music festivals in the US and abroad.

Performance | In Memoriam: Astor Place Riots 1849

A special event to commemorate the 175th anniversary of the 1849 Astor Place Riots. Every theater-lover should know the story of the Astor Place Riots, but it’s about much more than a fight between the two biggest actors of the day. The Riots are a national tragedy unlike any other. May 10, 1849, New York City: the bitter theatrical rivalry between two of the world’s best Shakespearean actors — American Edwin Forrest and British William Charles Macready — reaches a crescendo. On the last night of Macready’s third farewell tour of the U.S., thousands of Forrest supporters surrounded the Astor Place Opera House. The police and even military stepped in, and shortly thereafter, all hell broke loose. By day’s end, over 20 people were dead and hundreds wounded. For its 175th anniversary, Peculiar Works Project will commemorate this tragic event with a unique memorial service, including musical tributes and comical reenactments. It will celebrate the power of theater, its legacy of influence in New York City, and the thespians who dedicated their lives to it. But the dead were not just theater-lovers, they were also young rowdies, frightened neighbors and unsuspecting passersby. Step back into the turbulent mid-1800s and bear witness to this cautionary tale that shares many parallels to today’s extreme political culture. Fearful and growing territorialism, the perils of mob mentality, and what it means to be American are relevant once again. Observance of this unique theatrical moment, one of America’s most shameful events, is a solemn, satirical response to today’s nativism and xenophobia, closing with a procession to the site where it happened. The cast will feature Maria Dessena, Mick Hilgers, Ralph Lewis, Catherine Porter, Basil Rodericks, Barry Rowell, Trav S.D., Dane Lane Williams, and Zero Boy.

Play | Like a Little Grain of Sand: The Scapegoat's Story

At the age of 18, Giuseppe Gulotta is forced to confess to the murder of two policemen in a small barracks in Alcamo. The crime hides an unspeakable mystery: statesmen who deal with neo-fascist groups, arms trafficking and drugs. In order to cover up the silence, any scapegoat would do. Through the “human” story of Giuseppe (but also those of Salvatore and Carmine – the other designated scapegoats) the play attempts to give justice to its personal dimension, that of a life nearly entirely taken away for dreadful reasons. The performance is the last chapter of the quadrilogy A Sud della Memoria that Mana Chuma has devoted to the contemporary history of Southern Italy. In Italian with English Supertitles

Book Discussion | CANCELLED: Rajaraja Chola: King of Kings by Kamini Dandapani

Join author Kamini Dandapani as she discusses her book Rajaraja Chola: King of Kings with Navina Haidar, art historian and curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Rajaraja I, often described as Rajaraja the Great, was an emperor from the Chola dynasty who reigned the southern parts of India from 985 CE to 1014 CE. An iconic figure, often regarded as the King of Kings, he was the most powerful emperor in India during his reign and is remembered for reinstating the Chola influence and ensuring its supremacy across the Indian Ocean. His kingdom expanded from Sri Lanka in the south to Kalinga (Orissa) in the northeast. The southern part of India was united for the very first time in Indian history under his rule. By dividing the country into several districts and standardizing revenue collection through systematic land surveys, he streamlined the administrative system. He built the magnificent Brihadisvara Temple in Thanjavur, one of a group of Chola-era temples designated as a World Heritage Site. His achievements spanned the gamut from battlefield victories to administrative organization and stunning architectural works. Kamini Dandapani's book was published on the heels of Mani Ratnam's megastar film Ponniyin Selvan, also based on the Chola king Raja Raja Cholan. Rajaraja Chola: King of Kings chronicles the history of the Chola dynasty from its very earliest Sangam days until its demise.

Performance | Subterranean Memories: A Site-Specific Performance

Subterranean Memories invites the audience on an immersive journey to a desolate no-man’s land in a distant future, where inhabitants wait for the end to come. Following a catastrophic disaster, a resilient community has established itself in the basement of an abandoned, artist complex for a hundred years. What binds these people as a community is their commitment to preserving their memories of certain things, concepts, and rituals that defined the old world and are now being replicated in the new one. The audience is welcomed to observe a moving memory ritual, as residents showcase remnants of the past era that have ceased to exist in their current world—a world stripped of handwriting, theater, birthday parties, weddings, human kindness, and seasons. Devised, written, designed and performed by: Alina Burke, Miranda C. Derossi, Sydney H. Green, Harper Jones, Neka Knowles, Lars Montanaro, Noah Murray, Stella Rea Barnabe, Rodrigo Pocidonio, Deana P.
