Staged Reading | Ibsen's A Doll’s House

An abridged staged reading of the play A Doll’s House by Ibsen, directed by Eric Krebs. A Doll's House (Norwegian: Et dukkehjem) is an 1879 play by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen. Written one year after The Pillars of Society, the play was the first of Ibsen's to create a sensation and is now perhaps his most famous play, and required reading in many secondary schools and universities. The play was controversial when first published, as it is sharply critical of 19th century marriage norms. It follows the formula of well-made play up until the final act, when it breaks convention by ending with a discussion, not an unravelling. It is often called the first true feminist play. The play is also an important work of the naturalist movement, in which real events and situations are depicted on stage in a departure from previous forms such as romanticism.

Lecture | Memories of a Balkan Childhood: Wayne Vucinich in Hercegovina in the 1920s

For four decades, Professor Wayne Vucinich of Stanford University was perhaps the leading academic specialist on the Balkans in the United States. This lecture by Larry Wolff will discuss Vucinich’s memoirs, especially his recollections of his early life as a goatherd in the mountains of Hercegovina in the 1920s, and offer anthropological reflections on his childhood as he later looked back upon it from his perspective as a distinguished professor of Balkan history in the United States. Vucinich provided a detailed account of "the world we have lost" in the Balkans, and of the the traditional society of the Serbian village and zadruga as that society was beginning to be transformed by modernity in interwar Yugoslavia. The lecture will reflect on the connections between this early life and Vucinich's later academic career. Larry Wolff was a doctoral student of Wayne Vucinich at Stanford. Wolff is now professor of history at NYU and director of the NYU Center for European and Mediterranean Studies. His books include Inventing Eastern Europe (1994), Venice and the Slavs: The Discovery of Dalmatia in the Age of Enlightenment (2001), and the forthcoming The Idea of Galicia: History and Fantasy in Habsburg Political Culture (2010). Professor Wolff is also the editor of the Vucinich memoirs: Memoirs of My Childhood in Yugoslavia (2007).

A program of public events, talks and discussions focused on art, economics and institutional critique. They will attempt to translate the traditional role of the “think tank” into the sphere of cultural production and visual art. As the traditional think tank situates itself between the academy, special interests and government, the IAR will consider how to place itself critically within the circuits of distribution and legitimization of aesthetic objects and ideas. The IAR will itself be an experiment in the dynamics of cultural-political discourse.

Lecture | Transforming World Politics: From Empire to Multiple Worlds

Agathangelou, which critically examines contemporary world politics, arguing that the neo-liberal approach to international relations seduces people into dedicating their lives to projects of power and alienation. These projects offer few options for emancipation; consequently, many of those subject to them feel they have little choice but to respond with violence.

Screening | Documentary: George Amponsah's The Fighting Spirit

Boxing is show business with blood- a tough sport, which has always found its top competitors from the poorest neighborhoods, like Bukom, a tiny district in Ghana's capital city of Accra. Grounded in a long cultural tradition of wrestling that evolved into boxing, the tiny fishing village trains young people to fight and win. Bukom has produced up to five percent of the world's champion and Olympic medal boxers. The Fighting Spirit tells the story of three fighters from Bukom-two men and a woman as they battle their way to the glittering rings of Europe and America to compete for the biggest prizes in the business. Watch as the athletes fight for respect for their tribe and their home, and witness their triumphs and defeats in and out of the ring. The screening will start with a Music Lounge at 6pm and end with a Q&A with a guest speaker at 7:30pm.

They will also present a DVD produced in Moscow in 1988. In addition to footage of Galich's performances and excerpts from films for which Galich wrote screenplays, the documentary includes short interviews with his friends: Andrei Sakharov, Elena Bonner, Andrei Sinyavsky, Viktor Nekrasov, and other members of the cultural elite. Lecture | The Real Estate of Bohemia

In the early decades of the 20th century, Greenwich Village was a center for the rediscovery and redesign of obsolete and deteriorated row houses. Speculative developers, feeding off the neighborhood’s bohemian reputation, created “artist’s studios” in many of the old row houses, often redesigning facades with stucco fronts, tile highlights, and large loft windows. These changes dramatically changed the character of the Village. Architectural historian and Columbia University professor Andrew Dolkart will discuss this transformation in the Village and explore the history of the row house in Greenwich Village.

Screening | Guy Ben-Ner's Untitled: A Conversation With Himself About How Art Can Serve Life

Filmed and edited over the course of twelve months, Israeli artist Ben-Ner will present an unusual “live film,” that captures an ongoing phone conversation between the artist and himself as he flies to and fro between Berlin and Tel Aviv, the respective locations of his girlfriend and his family. Unlike a regular film, which is edited externally after all of the shooting is complete, Ben-Ner’s film never leaves the camera during a twelve-month period. The film always remains “live,” awaiting the next shot, which might take place in either Israel or Germany. Ben-Ner’s “storyboard” is life itself, and each scene occurs in real time, although with significant ellipses in between. Since the only editing is done entirely in-camera, the move from one shot to the next requires a real physical move: the camera traveling the full distance from Tel Aviv to Berlin and back as the dialogue progresses. Shot in Hebrew, and subtitled in English, the film presents a conversation in rhyme, which discusses how art can be at the service of life and the repercussions of such a unified relationship.

Lecture | Historicizing Erotohistoriography

Elizabeth Freeman argues for an "erotohistoriography": to wit, a politics of unpredictable, deeply embodied pleasures that might counter the neo-liberal demand to narrate time in one direction only. This talk is part of a larger book project that seeks to offer a revised history of sexuality that proposes the body as site of historical encounter--in and across time. Through these encounters across time, get a glimpse of historically specific pleasures and ways of organizing a life that exceed the current cramped politics of same-sex marriage as end game of sexual liberation.
