Conference | FDI, the Global Crisis and Sustainable Recovery

The global economic crisis has already had a tremendous effect in reducing FDI flows, and they are likely to continue to decline in 2009. At the same time, the deepening recession has made the need for such investment, and especially investments that will contribute to a sustainable recovery, ever more important. The financial crisis and recession therefore requires us to take stock of the changing trends in FDI and to discuss policy implications of encouraging FDI so that it may contribute to a robust and sustainable recovery. The conference will address how the crisis is affecting FDI (including the impact on flows, new players, changing patters of energy sector FDI), the changing business environment for FDI (including the effect of the crisis on social conditions, CSR and resource nationalism), and public policy opportunities for a sustainable recovery (including public-private partnerships, a global bankruptcy law and a sustainable investment regime). Confirmed speakers include: * Lee C. Bollinger, President * Meg Kinnear, Secretary-General, International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) * Karin Lissakers, Director, Revenue Watch Institute * Robert Orr, Assistant Secretary-General, Strategic Planning Unit, Executive Office of the Secretary-General, United Nations * Jeffrey D. Sachs, Director, The Earth Institute * Manfred Schekulin, Chairperson, OECD Investment Committee * Joseph E. Stiglitz, University Professor * Kari Tapiola, Executive Director, International Labour Organization

Performance | Performance Art: Marije Vogelzang's Pasta Sauna

According to Marinetti, pasta was the worst food to eat, because it made humans slow, dull, and fat–so in this installation, the steam created from boiling pasta will form a sauna, giving audience members the chance to be as lazy and un-energetic as they want. Marije Vogelzang invented her career as an eating designer after graduating from the Design Academy in 2000. She founded Proef in 2004, a restaurant in Rotterdam and a design studio/ restaurant in Amsterdam. The basis for her work is the verb “to eat.” Respecting the nature of food and creating experiences with food— from seed to shit —Vogelzang creates a bridge between the culinary world and the design world. Besides her design work for, among others, hospitals, museums, and restaurants, she works as a consultant and has lectured internationally. Her work has been covered in The New York Times Magazine, Icon, Wallpaper, and Food and Wine, and exhibited at Axis gallery in Tokyo. She recently published a book about her work and philosophy called Eat Love.

Performance | Performance Art: Nora Herting's Free Sittings

Many people have childhood memories of assuming strange postures and forced smiles while questionably fashioned, all for the benefit of appearing content, attractive, and harmonious in a family photograph. Nora Herting became so fascinated by the social phenomenon of these awkward and ubiquitous family portraits, that she went undercover as a trade photographer at JC Penney portrait studio. This is an outdoor performance that combines Herting's experience as a trade photographer with the serendipity of a New York City sidewalk. Working in collaboration with Stand Alone Gallery from a portable studio, Herting will compose group portraits from volunteers on the street while live audio from the performance is fed into the 3rd floor gallery. For a decade Herting has been involved in a tumultuous relationship with photography that has included affairs with sound, video, and performance. She has been an artist in residence at Anderson Ranch, 2000, Triangle Arts Workshop 2006, and McColl Center for Visual Arts 2007. She is a recipient of an Interpreting Brooklyn Fellowship by the Brooklyn Historical Society in 2008.

Opening Reception | Art and Design Show: Control | Print: Considering the Future of Ink on Paper

A collaboration with the Royal College of Art, London, that explores the intersection of craft and technology. The show features works by a number of notable international artists and designers who play with the notion of digital technology. The project is a commentary on the perception of digital printing as a lesser art form—one that is often considered more for its affordability and functionality than aesthetic value. RCA first conceived Control|Print as a research project, with works ranging from finely tuned production prints to one-off "original copies." In this first American presentation, prominent members of the community create new works in response to those commissioned by RCA, expanding the scope of the exhibition beyond the printed page.

Opening Reception | Performance Art: Shana Lutker's Hear It Here

This installation and performance consists of two actors, an audience and an accordion player. The audience is invited to spontaneously create lines for the actors by speaking into microphones that feed directly to the actors’ headphones on stage. The actors repeat what they hear. The accordionist plays interludes that both interrupt and contain the action. The structure allows for an unplanned and nonlinear dialogue consisting of the audience’s stream of consciousness, and it lends a sense of responsibility to the audience, who must produce the performance for themselves. The set-up creates an inversion of stage and audience, a blurring between the performers and spectators; both speak and listen. The actors can be seen as props or surrogates for the audience, but accountability for what is said is diffused or diverted through the actors. Part of an ongoing project, thus far versions of has been staged in Southern California, Miami, and Zurich. The script of each staging becomes part of the archive of performances, serving both as a portrait of the audience and a starting point for a future body of work.

Discussion | A Conversation with Kazakh Writer Olzhas Suleimenov

Olzhas Suleimenov (born in 1936) is one of the most influential and respected poets and writers in modern Kazakhstan. He authored more than sixteen books of poetry and prose. His polemic novel Az-i-Ia (1975) brought him both wide recognition in his native land and problems with the Soviet authorities. In addition to his artistic accomplishments Olzhas Suleimenov has been active in public life. He founded Nevada-Semipalatinsk Movement (1989), which became one of the most vocal voices for the closure of all nuclear testing facilities in Kazakhstan, and co-founded the Issyk Kul Forum, which has been recognized as important organization of intellectuals in the former Soviet Union. Currently he serves as the ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan to UNESCO. Introduction by Rafis Abazov, author of The Culture and Customs of the Central Asian Republics.

Lecture | Citizenship, Labor and the Biopolitics of the Bioeconomy: Recruiting Female Tissue Donors for Stem Cell Research

In this presentation, Professor Catherine Waldby will explore the emerging tensions between women's voluntary (public good) donation of reproductive tissues for stem cell research and the increasing resort to transactional forms of tissue procurement, for example egg sharing and egg vending. It will locate this tension in both a feminist biopolitical analysis and in the broader dynamics of the global bioeconomy.

Performance | Performance Art: Carla Hernandez's We Play (“Slide” Redux)

Hernandez recaptures childhood nostalgia through play. Blindfolded performers will entertain themselves in the gallery by playing “Slide”, a children's handclapping game, with each other while they wait for visitors to the gallery too join them in play. The game, which is not accompanied with a verbal rhyme, will develop into a social environment ofrhythmic sound and activity as a multitude of players simultaneously clap to the game. Hernandez is an emerging artist in New York City. She has performed works in galleries and alternative spaces in New York and New Jersey, including Kenkeleba Gallery and ABC No Rio.

Performance | Three Times Germany: An Audio Production by Uwe Mengel

An audio production featuring 23 monologues, narrated by eight actors. The monologues are based on interviews of East Germans, West Germans, and Germans living in New York. Retracing his own journey from East Germany to West Germany in 1974 and on to New York in 1980, Uwe Mengel interviewed Germans who crossed his path during that time. The results are the above-mentioned 23 monologues, which offer an unusual and very often disconcerting view into the judgments, prejudices, and reservations with which Germans view the “other Germans” after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Screening | Guy Ben-Ner's Untitled: A Conversation With Himself About How Art Can Serve Life

Filmed and edited over the course of twelve months, Israeli artist Ben-Ner will present an unusual “live film,” that captures an ongoing phone conversation between the artist and himself as he flies to and fro between Berlin and Tel Aviv, the respective locations of his girlfriend and his family. Unlike a regular film, which is edited externally after all of the shooting is complete, Ben-Ner’s film never leaves the camera during a twelve-month period. The film always remains “live,” awaiting the next shot, which might take place in either Israel or Germany. Ben-Ner’s “storyboard” is life itself, and each scene occurs in real time, although with significant ellipses in between. Since the only editing is done entirely in-camera, the move from one shot to the next requires a real physical move: the camera traveling the full distance from Tel Aviv to Berlin and back as the dialogue progresses. Shot in Hebrew, and subtitled in English, the film presents a conversation in rhyme, which discusses how art can be at the service of life and the repercussions of such a unified relationship.

Film | Ingmar Bergman's The Touch (1971)

With Bibi Andersson, Max von Sydow and Elliott Gould. A low-key, intimate drama set on the island of Gotland, just south of the filmmaker’s home in Fårö. Andersson creates a finely tuned portrayal of a woman facing a midlife crisis as she has an adulterous affair with an American archaeologist. The sparsely lit, claustrophobic interiors and subdued autumnal exteriors are beautifully photographed by cinematographer Sven Nykivst. The Touch, a Swedish-U.S. co-production, was shot and released in two versions: one with Swedish and English dialogue, and one entirely in English. The original bilingual version—the version released in Sweden and now presented in this festival—has been unavailable for a long time. Restored by The Swedish Film Institute. 115 min. In Swedish and English with English subtitles (pictured). Also showing: Stig Björkman's Ingmar Bergman (1972), a fascinating film about the making of The Touch showing Bergman rehearsing with actors Andersson, von Sydow, and Gould; discussing set-ups with cinematographer Nykvist; and talking in depth about his views on directing. Preserved by The Swedish Film Institute. 55 min. In Swedish with English subtitles. 55 min. Both screenings introduced by Jon Wengström, Curator of Archival Film Collections, The Swedish Film Institute, Stockholm.
