Other | Public Art Unveiling

Parks & Recreation unveils the newest public art piece by renowned Brooklyn artist Rachel Owens in honor of the late Clare Weiss. Owens’ "Inveterate Composition for Clare" is composed of dissembled parts from two replica "kit" military Hummer shells, recomposed and welded together in a monumental pyramid-shaped stack. Sprayed with metallic icy-white paint, the piece also evokes the form of an iceberg. Additional parts welded between the two create a more cohesive form and refer to extra armaments that American soldiers have recently added to their own Hummers and equipment.

Lecture | Seeing Like a Peacebuilder: An Ethnography of International Intervention

Why do international interventions so often fail to secure a sustainable peace? Why do others succeed? To answer these questions, we need to analyze how various cultures influence non-military peacebuilders on the ground, how the various actors and functions of peace interventions interact, and how shared understandings can promote peace intervention success. Based on qualitative research in conflict zones around the world, notably the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Sudan, Afghanistan, and Kosovo, Séverine Autesserre, of the Department of Political Science, examines the various cultures that shape peacebuilding in the field. She will discuss how diplomats, peacekeepers, and non-governmental organizations’ staff members share a culture that shapes their understandings of war, peace, and intervention, and how this phenomenon significantly affects the likelihood of peacebuilding success or failure.

Lecture | Afrofuturism: Mendi + Keith Obadike

The Transdisciplinary Seminar on Afrofuturism explores how representations of science, technology, and social engineering intersect with visual cultural expressions of the African Diaspora. Science fiction is the organizing theme that unites the guest presentations and works under consideration. Visiting artists and cultural theorists lecture on the role of futuristic speculations in African diasporic art, literature, film, and music. The ability of science fiction to function as both a fractured mirror of historical experience and a projection of the collective desires of a displaced people is discussed throughout the semester. Mendi + Keith Obadike make music, art and literature. Their works include The Sour Thunder, an Internet opera (Bridge Records), Crosstalk: American Speech Music (Bridge Records), Big House/Disclosure, a 200-hour public sound installation (Northwestern University), and a poetry collection, Armor and Flesh. Their honors include a Rockefeller Foundation New Media Arts Fellowship, a Pick Laudati Award for Digital Art, a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Fiction, and a Vectors Fellowship from the University of Southern California. Their intermedia work has been commissioned by Whitechapel Art Gallery and The Whitney Museum of American Art. Keith received a MFA in Sound Design from Yale University. Mendi received a PhD in Literature from Duke University. Mendi + Keith are currently developing a sound installation series (African Metropole/Sonic City), an intermedia suite titled American Cypher, and a new series of performance works that includes Four Electric Ghosts, an Opera-Masquerade (Mmanwu) commissioned by The Kitchen.

Lecture | Color, Ethnic/Race Identity and Socioeconomic Status in Latin America

By examining the effects of self-identified ethnicity/race and interviewer-observed skin color on socioeconomic status (SES) in Brazil, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Peru, Edward Telles demonstrates that the effects of skin color on SES are often greater than self-identified ethnicity/race. Professor Telles’ work suggests that census data on ethnicity/race does not fully capture the effects of racial discrimination and inequality. Edward Telles is a professor of sociology at Princeton University and the author most recently of Generations of Exclusion: Mexican Americans, Assimilation and Race (with Vilma Ortiz) and Race in Another America: The Significance of Skin Color in Brazil.

Discussion | Coming Out in the Developing World: Palestine Queers - Creating the Conditions for Change

In the face of multiple oppressions Palestine gays in the Middle East and abroad are working towards peace in multiple ways. Through the arts and economics, an international community of queer activists are calling attention to the ways in which race, class, gender, national identity, and sexuality intersect as both sites of opportunity, and places for systemic violence. Paramount in the work is the call made in 2005 by Palestinian Civil Society for a Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against Israel until it complies with International law and Universal Principal of Human Rights. Urging queers to join the movement PQBDS was formed to communicate the ways in which diversity within the Palestinian movement is being lost, a desire to ensure queer people are represented in the larger conversation, and to confront the marketing blitz of Israel as a 'gay haven' within the Middle East. In this mixed media, interactive community discussion, members of PQBDS will share their work, plans for the future and recent successes including forcing the relocation of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer Youth and Student organization's 2011 General Assembly from Israel. Questions that will be raised include: Am I a homonationalist? Have I been pinkwashed? The event will feature video work by renowned filmmaker John Greyson, and emerging artist Nadia Award.

Slide Lecture | Andrew F. Smith discusses his book Starving the South: How the North Won the Civil War

In this illustrated lecture, a historian focuses on how Union blockades brought about the defeat of a hungry Confederacy. The author takes a gastronomical look at the war’s outcome and legacy. While the war split the country in a way that still affects race and politics today, it also affected the way we eat: It transformed local markets into nationalized food suppliers, forced the development of a Northern canning industry, established Thanksgiving as a national holiday and forged the first true national cuisine from the recipes of emancipated slaves who migrated north. On the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Fort Sumter, he is the first to ask “Did hunger defeat the Confederacy?”

Every day, across all corners of the globe, hundreds of thousands of users log onto Second Life, a virtual online world not entirely unlike our own. They enter a new reality, whose inhabitants assume alternate personas in the form of avatars: digital alter egos that can be sculpted and manipulated to one’s heart’s desire, representing reality, fantasy, or a healthy mix of both. Within this alternate landscape, escapism abounds, relationships are formed, and a real-world economy thrives, effectively blurring the lines between reality and "virtual" reality. A post-screening panel will take place with the filmmaker and faculty members Kathleen Hulley (Literature) and Mechthild Schmidt (Digital Communications and Media).

Poetry Reading | Tess Gallagher discusses her book Midnight Lantern

Gallagher collects her indispensable work from forty years of writing poetry, along with an ample new section written in the west of Ireland. Included in this generous book are Gallagher’s signature nocturnes—for the changing Pacific Northwest, for her hardscrabble childhood, and for her late husband, Raymond Carver, and others. Her challenging new work confronts a tumultuous century’s worth of art, warfare, and illness, while certifying the stubborn resilience of poetry and love. Astonishing, insightful, mischievous, an inimitable “seeing-into experience,” Midnight Lantern is the essential book by a poet in the prime of her power.
