Other | Tatzu Nishi: Discovering Columbus: Visit the Famous Statue Up Close and 70 Feet in the Air

This major new artwork has been created by the Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi. The work places the 13-foot-tall statue of Columbus in the center of an American living room six stories above the city streets, recontextualizing the historical monument and temporarily transforming it into a contemporary artwork. The room will feature many of the trappings of a domestic living room—lamps, a couch, a coffee table, a television, and more—as well as custom wallpaper by the artist. Through large, loft-style windows, visitors will have dramatic views of Central Park and Midtown Manhattan that will be seen from Columbus’s perspective for the first time. Pass holders are asked to climb six flights of stairs to a height of 70 feet above street level and to descend by a second set of stairs. Flat, rubber-soled shoes are strongly recommended. This exhibition is ADA accessible. If a visitor requires the use of a mobility device (e.g. wheelchair, crutches, or a cane) or has a condition that prevents him or her from using the stairs, a hoist is available. Visitors under 13 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Those between the ages of 13 and 18 may visit without an adult, however a parent or guardian must obtain a pass for them. Given the physical demands of visiting the exhibition, it is not recommended for children under the age of 5. Strollers are not permitted.

City Walk | Greenwich Village Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Talk | Making Use of 500,000 Researchers: Tales from the Zooniverse

Zooniverse.org is the world's largest and most successful collection of online citizen science projects, and has enabled volunteers to classify more than a million galaxies, discover planets around other stars, transcribe more than a million pages of ships' logs and even sort through ancient papyri. In this talk, Zooniverse PI Chris Lintott (University of Oxford) will talk through the highlights, preview some forthcoming attractions and explain how to cope when everyone turns up at once. A particular focus will be on the research that volunteers have carried out on their own, diving deeper into collections than we would have ever thought possible or designed for. Speaker Chris Lintott is a researcher at the University of Oxford where he is also a junior research fellow at New College. Originally (and still technically) an astronomer interested in the chemistry of star and galaxy formation, he spends most of his time running the Zooniverse, a collection of citizen science projects that covers everything from planets to papyri. A passionate advocate of public participation in science, he is best known as co-presenter of the BBC's (very) long-running 'Sky at Night' program, and as co-author of two books with Sir Patrick Moore and Queen guitarist Brian May. One of these books, Bang! : The complete history of the Universe, has been translated into American.

Video | Oscar Muñoz’s 2003 Video Re/trato Projected on the Side of a Building

Colombian artist Oscar Muñoz’s 2003 video Re/trato will be projected on a building to the east visible from the park’s Seating Steps, as well as the sidewalk. One of Colombia’s most influential artists, Oscar Muñoz has created an impressive body of work that investigates memory and history, and the ways both intertwine with our contemporary society. Here, Muñoz presents a video in which you see the artist painting a self-portrait on a concrete sidewalk by using a brush and water. The hand continuously paints as the portrait evaporates, creating an endless drawing. Reflecting on the ephemeral nature of identity, the work highlights the liminal space between remembering and forgetting, between an image and its obliteration.

Workshop | Intro Class: Kundalini Yoga: A Journey Through the Chakras

With Donna Amrita Davidge. The Kundalini Yoga tradition teaches that to realize our potential as human beings it is important to tap into our often dormant subtle spiritual energy (kundalini) and circulate it effectively. A key to this effort is to unblock and harmonize our chakras, the seven main centers of subtle energy in the body. In this class, we will use specially designed breathing techniques, postures, movements and mantra chanting to unlock our latent spiritual power and learn to direct its flow up through our seven chakras, thereby strengthening the nerves, internal organs and glands associated with each chakra and dramatically boosting our health and well-being. We will also work with our aura (the electromagnetic field that surrounds all living things) to make it a more effective protective shield that can help us ward off illness, injury and negative energies.

Discussion | Culinary Luminary: Henri Soulé

Henri Soulé (1903–1966) came to New York from France in 1939 to serve as maitre d’ for the restaurant in the French pavilion at the World’s Fair. When the fair closed in 1940, France was under German occupation, and Soulé elected to remain here. The next year, he opened Le Pavilion, which became the model for high-end restaurants in the United States. Through his restaurants and the staff he trained, he probably had more influence on haute cuisine in the United States than any other chef or restaurateur in the 20th century. Moderated by Andrew F. Smith, faculty member of the New School Food Studies program, speakers include: William Grimes, New York Times columnist Mitchell Davis, vice president of the James Beard Foundation Priscilla Parker-Ferguson, author of Accounting for Taste: the Triumph of French Cuisine

Theater | Intimate Apparel by Lynn Nottage, a Student Play

The time is 1905, New York City: Esther, a black seamstress, lives in a boarding house for women and sews intimate apparel for clients who range from wealthy white patrons to prostitutes. One by one, the other denizens of the boarding house marry and move away, but Esther remains, lonely and longing for a husband and a future. By way of a mutual acquaintance, she begins to receive beautiful letters from a lonesome Caribbean man named George who is working on the Panama Canal. Meanwhile, Esther's heart seems to lie with the Hasidic shopkeeper from whom she buys cloth – and his heart with her – but the impossibility of the match is obvious to them both, and Esther consents to marry George. However, when George arrives in New York, he turns out not to be the man his letters painted him to be. Deeply wounded by the betrayal, but somehow unbroken, Esther returns to the boarding house determined to use her gifted hands and her sewing machine to refashion her dreams and make them anew from the whole cloth of her life's experiences.
