Other | Tatzu Nishi: Discovering Columbus: Visit the Famous Statue Up Close and 70 Feet in the Air

This major new artwork has been created by the Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi. The work places the 13-foot-tall statue of Columbus in the center of an American living room six stories above the city streets, recontextualizing the historical monument and temporarily transforming it into a contemporary artwork. The room will feature many of the trappings of a domestic living room—lamps, a couch, a coffee table, a television, and more—as well as custom wallpaper by the artist. Through large, loft-style windows, visitors will have dramatic views of Central Park and Midtown Manhattan that will be seen from Columbus’s perspective for the first time. Pass holders are asked to climb six flights of stairs to a height of 70 feet above street level and to descend by a second set of stairs. Flat, rubber-soled shoes are strongly recommended. This exhibition is ADA accessible. If a visitor requires the use of a mobility device (e.g. wheelchair, crutches, or a cane) or has a condition that prevents him or her from using the stairs, a hoist is available. Visitors under 13 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Those between the ages of 13 and 18 may visit without an adult, however a parent or guardian must obtain a pass for them. Given the physical demands of visiting the exhibition, it is not recommended for children under the age of 5. Strollers are not permitted.

Concert | American Composers Orchestra - CoLABoratory: Playing It UNsafe #1

ACOs season-long CoLABoratory initiative is the first and only professional research and development laboratory to support the creation of cutting-edge new American orchestral music through no-holds-barred experimentation. CoLABoratory alters the landscape by treating the creation of a new orchestral work as an interactive and collaborative process, rather than just the delivery of a musical product. This year, CoLABoratory will include a unique incubation process of workshops, public readings, collaborative feedback, and laboratory performances of music, open to the public, taking place from November 2012 through April 2013.A nationwide call for proposals was submitted last spring for music that challenges conventional notions about orchestral music. The composers selected to participate in the 2012-13 CoLABoratory program will be chosen for their willingness to experiment and stretch their own musical sensibilities, and their ability to test and stretch the possibilities for the orchestra itself.

Video | Oscar Muñoz’s 2003 Video Re/trato Projected on the Side of a Building

Colombian artist Oscar Muñoz’s 2003 video Re/trato will be projected on a building to the east visible from the park’s Seating Steps, as well as the sidewalk. One of Colombia’s most influential artists, Oscar Muñoz has created an impressive body of work that investigates memory and history, and the ways both intertwine with our contemporary society. Here, Muñoz presents a video in which you see the artist painting a self-portrait on a concrete sidewalk by using a brush and water. The hand continuously paints as the portrait evaporates, creating an endless drawing. Reflecting on the ephemeral nature of identity, the work highlights the liminal space between remembering and forgetting, between an image and its obliteration.

Lecture | Transnational Migrant Connections in the U.S. and Europe

A lecture by Roger Waldinger. How have new means of communication transformed the connections between migrants and their homelands? While many point optimistically to a “death of distance,” wherein new and proliferating technologies supposedly bring immigrants ever-closer to their families, data shows that communications between migrants and loved ones at home remain erratic and vulnerable. Roger Waldinger, distinguished professor of sociology at UCLA, is the author of six books on international migration.

Book Discussion | Book Club: Leeches by David Albahari

Serbia in the 1990’s; a journalist spots a man slapping a woman on the shore of the Danube. A few days after witnessing the altercation, the journalist receives a mysterious manuscript whose contents seem to mutate each time he opens it. To decipher the manuscript—he delves deep into the Kabbala and the history of the Jews of Zemun of Belgrade. The event soon points to a complicated anti-Semitic conspiracy set in motion by the Patriotic Army of Unity and Salvation. As he begins to see signs of anti-Semitism throughout the city, he feels compelled to denounce it. However, his efforts are waylaid by a scandal that will end up in murder. In the style of Foucault’s Pendulum, Leeches is a cerebral adventure into the underground worlds of secret societies and conspiracy theories. About the author David Albahari (b. 1948 in Pec, Serbia, SFR Yugoslavia) is a writer and translator of Jewish origin from Kosovo. He resides in Calgary, Alberta, Canada since 1994. His writings are mainly novels and short stories in the Serbian language. A graduate of the University of Belgrade, his collection of short stories Description of Death won the Ivo Andric award in 1982. His novel Bait won the NIN award in 1996, as well as the Balcanica Award and Berlin Bridge Prize. His books have been translated into sixteen languages, and six of them are available in English: Words Are Something Else (1996), Tsing (1997), Bait (2001), Gotz and Meyer (2003, UK) (2005, US), Snow Man (2005), and Leeches (2011). Autumn - and the start of the new school year - is a fine time to consider our mentors, writing teachers who make a difference, and the myriad kinds of influence available to writers and aspiring writers. Theater | Play: Grant and Twain by Elizabeth Diggs

In 1884, Ulysses Grant was the idolized four-star Union Commander who won the Civil War. Mark Twain was the most famous writer in America. The two men were superstars. They were also, improbably, good friends. Twain had just broken a seven-year writer’s block to finish Huckleberry Finn. Grant had just been swindled out of all his money in a Ponzi scheme. Grant’s only chance to save his honor and provide for his family was to write his memoirs. Twain persuaded Grant to entrust the publication of his book to his own new publishing house. Halfway through the book, Grant was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and threatened with betrayal close to home. Twain went into serious debt and put his own career on hold for a year in his determination to save Grant’s reputation before he died. Grant’s Personal Memoirs and Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn became masterpieces of American writing.

Lecture | The Art of the Facsimile

With Nadja Aksamija. Advances in digital technology have had a great impact on the quality of facsimiles of historic works of art and architecture that can be produced for purposes of virtual conservation, digital restoration and museum display. When the technology is combined with traditional artistic skills, the results virtually erase the line between the original and its facsimile, creating a completely new paradigm regarding the authenticity of the viewing experience. This talk considers two case studies involving Renaissance originals and their facsimiles: the reconstruction of the Loggetta in Venice’s Piazza San Marco after the collapse of the bell tower in 1902, and the reproduction of the monumental fresco map of the city of Bologna, located at the Vatican’s inaccessible Sala Bologna.

Discussion | What Does It Mean to Be Human: Can We Still Have Faith in the Academy?

Education in the 21st century is seen as a means of training workers for the global market, helping young people develop a sense of identity, and driving social mobility. But is there more to education than becoming an informed citizen, getting a job, and taking tests? The last hundred years have seen a shift in the model of American higher education from a system based on colleges providing a uniform and largely traditional education to one geared toward research and specialization. Is there value in requiring all students to possess common knowledge? Does allowing student choice amount to academic freedom, or is it a testament to the decline of professorial authority? A panel moderated by Alan Miller, a director of The New York Salon, examines these questions. Panelists include: David Scobey, executive dean of The New School for Public Engagement and a national leader in developing innovative methods to bring higher-education institutions together with communities to explore the arts, humanities, and design. Scobey is the author of Empire City: The Making and Meaning of the New York City Landscape and other studies of politics, culture, and space in 19th-century America. Andrew Delbanco, Mendelson Family Chair of American Studies and Julian Clarence Levi Professor in the Humanities at Columbia University. Delbanco was awarded the 2011 National Humanities Medal by President Obama “for his writing that spans the literature of Melville and Emerson to contemporary issues in higher education.” In 2001, he was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and named America’s Best Social Critic by Time Magazine. In 2003, he was named New York State Scholar of the Year by the New York Council for the Humanities. Professor Delbanco is the author of many books, including, most recently, College: What It Was, Is, and Should Be. Anya Kamenetz, a senior writer at Fast Company magazine. She is the author of Generation Debt (2006) and DIY U: Edupunks, Edupreneurs, and the Coming Transformation of Higher Education (2010). She has also written two ebooks, The Edupunks’ Guide (2011) and Learning, Freedom and the Web, produced in collaboration with the Mozilla community (2011). Kamenetz was named a Game Changer in Education by The Huffington Post, received two National Awards for Education Reporting from the Education Writers Association, and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in Feature Writing by the Village Voice in 2005. Angus Kennedy, head of external relations for the Institute of Ideas, for which he programs the annual Battle of Ideas Festival in London and its international satellite events. He is the convenor of the institute’s new initiative The Academy and chairs its Economy Forum. Kennedy writes for publications including spiked and Culture Wars on subjects such as the Holocaust, classics, culture and the arts, economics, and moral philosophy.
