Video | Oscar Muñoz’s 2003 Video Re/trato Projected on the Side of a Building

Colombian artist Oscar Muñoz’s 2003 video Re/trato will be projected on a building to the east visible from the park’s Seating Steps, as well as the sidewalk. One of Colombia’s most influential artists, Oscar Muñoz has created an impressive body of work that investigates memory and history, and the ways both intertwine with our contemporary society. Here, Muñoz presents a video in which you see the artist painting a self-portrait on a concrete sidewalk by using a brush and water. The hand continuously paints as the portrait evaporates, creating an endless drawing. Reflecting on the ephemeral nature of identity, the work highlights the liminal space between remembering and forgetting, between an image and its obliteration.

Talk | Trace Your Roots with DNA

Over the past decade, genetic genealogy has graduated from pioneering research to one more tool in our family history arsenal, but just as the number of us taking DNA tests has grown, so have our genetic options. Come hear one of the co-authors of Trace Your Roots with DNA discuss how Y-DNA and mtDNA testing can be used to shed light on the paternal and maternal branches of your family tree, as well as how new (in many respects, revolutionary), autosomal tests can reveal previously unknown facets hidden anywhere in your family's past. (P.S. Talk delivered in plain English!) Megan Smolenyak co-authored (with Ann Turner) Trace Your Roots with DNA, in addition to several other books. She is the founder of Unclaimed Persons, a volunteer group that helps medical examiners identify the unclaimed dead, and is a frequent consultant on both the NBC series “Who Do You Think You Are?” and Henry Louis Gates PBS series, Finding Your Roots.

Informed by their current exhibitions, Resonance at the Goethe-Institut New York and Resonance and Repetition on view at the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts, as well as by ongoing discussions with collaborators and artists, their talk highlights artistic projects and so touches upon current models of representation, resistance, and withdrawal.

Author Reading | Ben Lerner reads from his novel Leaving the Atocha Station

“[A] subtle, sinuous, and very funny first novel. . . Leaving the Atocha Station has a beguiling mixture of lightness and weight. There are wonderful sentences and jokes on almost every page. Lerner is attempting to capture something that most conventional novels, with their cumbersome caravans of plot and scene and “conflict,” fail to do: the drift of thought, the unmomentous passage of undramatic life. . . . But it is one of the paradoxes of this cunning book that what might seem a skeptically postmodern comedy is also an earnestly old-fashioned seeker of the real—that other thing.” —James Wood, The New Yorker

Screening | Czech Documentary: Klara Reznickova's The Tripoint (2011)

A social-poetic portrait of the easternmost village in the Czech Republic. The topic of the film are the destinies of people who live in the borderlands of Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. In an era of open borders in the framework of the European Union and a globalized world the question of nationality, identity and roots is very pertinent. In the border towns and elsewhere imaginary borders within people often still persist. 59 min. With English subtitles.
