Other | Artist Lynx transforms pianos into works of art

Artist, actor, writer, international model, and creative director Gary Moore (aka "Lynx") made his modeling debut at Paris Fashion Week in 1983. Once on the runway, he tripped on the catwalk and, without missing a beat, improvised a cat crawl which earned him his unique adopted name. After modeling for 25 years, Lynx's transition to visual art gained attention with a masterful sculpted painting of a concert grand piano called Finding Cliburn: The Eye of the Sound. Lynx so impressed with his work that he was extended an unprecedented invitation to transform a selection of signature pianos into completely original works of art. Lynx's creative process will be put on display for the public to witness firsthand in the windows of the celebrated hall, where his creations will also be available for purchase.

Tour | The High Line Sunset Tour

The area around the HighLine Park was a vital business district of New York City, supplying fresh fruits, French Cheeses and Russian caviar as well as fresh meats to City markets. The hustle and bustle of the streets induced the City to elevate the railroad trains delivering goods to the commercial buildings. When interstate truck traffic made the railway outdated, it fell into ruin, only to be regenerated as a park.

Video | Oscar Muñoz’s 2003 Video Re/trato Projected on the Side of a Building

Colombian artist Oscar Muñoz’s 2003 video Re/trato will be projected on a building to the east visible from the park’s Seating Steps, as well as the sidewalk. One of Colombia’s most influential artists, Oscar Muñoz has created an impressive body of work that investigates memory and history, and the ways both intertwine with our contemporary society. Here, Muñoz presents a video in which you see the artist painting a self-portrait on a concrete sidewalk by using a brush and water. The hand continuously paints as the portrait evaporates, creating an endless drawing. Reflecting on the ephemeral nature of identity, the work highlights the liminal space between remembering and forgetting, between an image and its obliteration.

Opening Reception | Akira Ikezoe's Drawing

Artist Statement: "My drawing is based on my personal and intimate experiences, and it is a consequence of having been influenced by my surroundings as well. I draw a line on a piece of paper. The line's color, shape and texture stimulate my mental and physical memories, and remind me of something related to my past experience. Then it makes me decide how to draw the second line, which stimulates my memory again. Through this process, all of my reactions to what I see on the paper, become a reminder of my past. At the same time, it's a direction towards the future."

Gallery Talk | Guided Tour of Echoes of the Past: The Buddhist Cave Temples of Xiangtangshan

A major exhibition that explores the Buddhist cave temples of Xiangtangshan, the crowning cultural achievement of the sixth-century Northern Qi dynasty (550-77 CE). Carved into the mountains of northern China, the temples were once home to a magnificent array of sculptures—monumental Buddhas, divine attendant figures, and crouching monsters framed by floral motifs. These statues are among the finest embodiments of Chinese Buddhist sculpture and are seminal to our understanding of the history of Chinese Buddhist style and iconography.

Lecture | Why Socrates? Advocating a Philosophy of Resistance

A lecture by André Glucksmann. In the ever-intensifying crisis of the West, philosophy is once again called upon. Yet, what it is missing, according to Glucksmann, is the non-essential sensitivity of Socratic questioning, resisting the pervasive, latent or open totalitarian ideology of thought. André Glucksmann reminds us that, even though we often refer to "Philosophy" since the demise of a blind faith in progress, the dimension of the Socratic radicalism of “know yourself” – the clear differentiation between right and wrong – remains obscure.

Theater | Intimate Apparel by Lynn Nottage, a Student Play

The time is 1905, New York City: Esther, a black seamstress, lives in a boarding house for women and sews intimate apparel for clients who range from wealthy white patrons to prostitutes. One by one, the other denizens of the boarding house marry and move away, but Esther remains, lonely and longing for a husband and a future. By way of a mutual acquaintance, she begins to receive beautiful letters from a lonesome Caribbean man named George who is working on the Panama Canal. Meanwhile, Esther's heart seems to lie with the Hasidic shopkeeper from whom she buys cloth – and his heart with her – but the impossibility of the match is obvious to them both, and Esther consents to marry George. However, when George arrives in New York, he turns out not to be the man his letters painted him to be. Deeply wounded by the betrayal, but somehow unbroken, Esther returns to the boarding house determined to use her gifted hands and her sewing machine to refashion her dreams and make them anew from the whole cloth of her life's experiences.
