From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all. Lecture | The LGBT Movement in Albania: Art, Politics and History

The Alliance Against LGBT Discrimination in Albania was founded only six years ago in an atmosphere which at the time did not even consider fostering the discussion of LGBT rights. Emerging out of strong prejudices, violence and a complete lack of visibility or hope, today the LGBT community is one of the strongest and most vibrant voices in the debate over Human Rights in Albania. This is due to the group’s continuous efforts to keep the movement grounded and strongly connected to the community that it serves. Elvis Hoxhaj will explore how the confluence of artistic gestures, politics and history has made it possible for the Alliance, which started as a grassroots organization, to maintain the characteristics of one while advocating for LGBT Rights.

Opening Reception | Exhibition: Takesada Matsutani

This is the gallery’s first New York exhibition devoted to internationally admired, Osaka-born, Paris-based artist Takesada Matsutani. Over a five-decade career that began with his participation in the Gutai Art Association and evolved to express the tangled complexities of a life lived between France and Japan, Matsutani has developed a unique visual language of form and materials. His work plays with notions of time and the movement of our bodies through it. Engaging themes of the eternal and the infinite, and echoing the endless cycles of life and death, Matsutani merges material, hue, and movement to arrive at an art about the present moment and the reverberating forces and unceasing currents from which life itself flows.

Lecture | Memory as a Social Facilitator: The Effects of Social Interaction on Memory

Why is human memory vulnerable to mistakes? As recent controversies over thee recollections offered by celebrities such as Brian Williams or Hillary Clinton indicate, people are confused about the nature of human memory. On the one hand, they view memory as similar enough to the memory of a computer to expect reasonably accurate recollections. On the other hand, most people also recognize the limits of this perspective. If human memory is simply a storage mechanism, then why is it unreliable, malleable, and despite its extraordinary capacity, unable to perform the feats of memories computers are easily capable of achieving? Talk followed by a reception.

By the end of 1928, all three Fail sisters will be dead – expiring in reverse order, youngest to oldest, from blunt object to the head, disappearance, and finally consumption. Tuneful songs, and a whimsical chorus follow the story of Nelly, Jenny June, and Gerty as they live out their lives above the family clock repair shop near the Chicago River, before their time unexpectedly runs out. A magical, musical fable where, in the end, the power of love is far greater than any individual's successes or failures. Performances run November 3-7.
