Francis Picabia: Our Heads Are Round so Our Thoughts Can Change Direction (MoMA,The Joan and Preston Robert Tisch Exhibition Gallery, sixth floor, November 20, 2016 – March 19, 2017) will chart the full range of Picabia’s audacious, provocative, and profoundly influential career. It will be the first large-scale retrospective of the artist’s work to be held in New York in over forty-five years. Among the great modern artists, Francis Picabia (French, 1879 – 1953) remains one of the most elusive; he vigorously avoided any one singular style or medium, and his practice encompassed painting, performance, poetry, publishing, and film. Discussion | The Zine Project: AUNTS

A conversation with dance collective, AUNTS, on the final evening of their zine residency. AUNTS, organized by Laurie Berg and Liliana Dirks-Goodman, generates a constantly shifting environment, often in the form of a live event. In trying to “fill out the gap” left by deaths from AIDS, the zine, as a handmade, grassroots object, will serve as a central metaphor for addressing the ephemeral, fragmentary, and affective documents of a generation of artists. Two artist collectives, Allied Productions (October 18) and AUNTS (November 8) will develop zines and related live presentations addressing how each collective’s artistic practices might be in conversation with the reality and aftermath of the AIDS epidemic in the NYC dance and performance community.
