Screening | Experience what can not be said: A Trilogy of Virtual Reality Films (online)

Gina Kim's virtual reality (VR) trilogy on US military comfort women, the Comfortless Trilogy, has garnered international acclaim ever since the director's first VR film, Bloodless, won the first Best VR story award at the 2017 Venice International Film Festival. The second project, Tearless (2021), further explored Kim's focus on bringing back the silenced voice of the comfort women through the viewer's embodied experience. The final VR film, Comfortless, which premiered at the Venice Immersive 2023, not only completed the trilogy, but also expanded the project's scope through the creation of the extended reality (XR) "American Town," the brothel town near the US Air Force base featured in the VR experience. The AR and XR versions of both Tearless and Comfortless have reached a larger audience beyond the exhibition venues, allowing their users to bring the critical sites of historical trauma into their personal spaces. This event will feature the director's talk on her journey from producing the VR trilogy to her recent experimentations with other reality media.

Book Discussion | That Librarian: The Fight Against Book Banning in America by Amanda Jones

Part memoir, part manifesto, the inspiring story of a Louisiana librarian advocating for inclusivity on the front lines of our vicious culture wars. One of the things small town librarian Amanda Jones values most about books is how they can affirm a young person's sense of self. So in 2022, when she caught wind of a local public hearing that would discuss “book content,” she knew what was at stake. Schools and libraries nationwide have been bombarded by demands for books with LGTBQ+ references, discussions of racism, and more to be purged from the shelves. Amanda would be damned if her community were to ban stories representing minority groups. She spoke out that night at the meeting. Days later, she woke up to a nightmare that is still ongoing. Amanda Jones has been called a groomer, a pedo, and a porn-pusher; she has faced death threats and attacks from strangers and friends alike. Her decision to support a collection of books with diverse perspectives made her a target for extremists using book banning campaigns-funded by dark money organizations and advanced by hard right politicians-in a crusade to make America more white, straight, and "Christian." But Amanda Jones wouldn't give up without a fight: she sued her harassers for defamation and urged others to join her in the resistance. Mapping the book banning crisis occurring all across the nation, That Librarian draws the battle lines in the war against equity and inclusion, calling book lovers everywhere to rise in defense of our readers. At this event, librarian Amanda Jones will discuss her new book and more with author Peter Parnell.

Concert | Opera in Concert: Vinkensport, or The Finch Opera and The Infinite Energy Of Ada Lovelace

"...an exuberant, rhythmically vibrant score by David T. Little with an infectious opening chorus." -The New York Times "[Kamala Sankaram] is one of the most exciting opera composers in the country." -The Washington Post Mannes Opera presents an Opera in Concert double bill featuring the works of David T. Little and Kamala Sankaram, directed by Alison Pogolrec, offering an operatic lens into the strange world of human experience. Vinkensport, or The Finch Opera (2010/2018), composed by David T. Little on a libretto by Royce Vavrek, receives its New York premiere with Mannes Opera. Vinkensport is a bitter-sweet comedy in one act, which explores obsession, desire, and the need to prevail, through the frame of an obscure Flemish folk sport, "finch-sitting." Trained finches race to sing the most "susk-e-wiets" over the course of an hour. As they compete, the joys, sorrows, delusions and all-too-stark realities of their trainers are revealed. The Infinite Energy of Ada Lovelace (2019), composed by Kamala Sankaram with a libretto by Rob Handel, follows Ada, Countess of Lovelace and Lord Byron's daughter, who has been asked to help Charles Babbage with his work on the Difference Engine. She struggles between her work in mathematics and upholding her reputation as a wife, mother, and public figure. The revolutionary concepts that she put forth in her notes about the potential ability of the Engine to carry out an algorithm led Ada to be considered the world's first computer programmer.
