Concert | Opera in Concert: Vinkensport, or The Finch Opera and The Infinite Energy Of Ada Lovelace

"...an exuberant, rhythmically vibrant score by David T. Little with an infectious opening chorus." -The New York Times "[Kamala Sankaram] is one of the most exciting opera composers in the country." -The Washington Post Mannes Opera presents an Opera in Concert double bill featuring the works of David T. Little and Kamala Sankaram, directed by Alison Pogolrec, offering an operatic lens into the strange world of human experience. Vinkensport, or The Finch Opera (2010/2018), composed by David T. Little on a libretto by Royce Vavrek, receives its New York premiere with Mannes Opera. Vinkensport is a bitter-sweet comedy in one act, which explores obsession, desire, and the need to prevail, through the frame of an obscure Flemish folk sport, "finch-sitting." Trained finches race to sing the most "susk-e-wiets" over the course of an hour. As they compete, the joys, sorrows, delusions and all-too-stark realities of their trainers are revealed. The Infinite Energy of Ada Lovelace (2019), composed by Kamala Sankaram with a libretto by Rob Handel, follows Ada, Countess of Lovelace and Lord Byron's daughter, who has been asked to help Charles Babbage with his work on the Difference Engine. She struggles between her work in mathematics and upholding her reputation as a wife, mother, and public figure. The revolutionary concepts that she put forth in her notes about the potential ability of the Engine to carry out an algorithm led Ada to be considered the world's first computer programmer.

Opening Reception | In Battle or in Vain: Paintings Inspired by Michelangelo and More

Artist Andres Serrano reflects on images by Michelangelo from nearly 500 years ago. Drawing from his own past, he creates new works by photographing, enlarging, and painting over images from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Villa Borghese, and his personal library. With dynamic brushwork, he transforms cardboard backing into a frame for Christian iconography, while delving into themes of reification and the enduring influence of the past. In his Philosopher paintings, Benjamin Bertocci explores the existential challenges of human life in a rapidly evolving world marked by AI advancements, late-stage capitalism, and looming crises. His works capture the anxieties surrounding these conditions, focusing more on evoking the emotional response to these issues than directly depicting them. The paintings question how one can confront the present in the face of overwhelming technological and environmental change.

Lecture | The Modern Concrete Skyscraper: Montreal’s Place Victoria (online)

In 1965, the 47-story Place Victoria in Montreal’s financial district surpassed Chicago's 1000 Lake Shore Plaza as the world's tallest concrete skyscraper. Designed by Italian architect Luigi Moretti and Italian structural engineer Pier Luigi Nervi, the project brought together expertise from both sides of the Atlantic. In Katie's Filek's talk, she details the use of concrete in the tower and how the project was the product of both highly localized conditions of costs, materials, and labor in Montreal and of specialized knowledge held not only by the Italian designers, but also by Montreal-based architects and engineers.
