Book Discussion | Yankee Doodle Dandy: George M. Cohan and the Broadway Stage (online)

Playwright, composer, actor, director, and producer George M. Cohan looms large in musical theater legend. Remembered today for classic tunes like "You're a Grand Old Flag" and "Give My Regards to Broadway," he has been called "the father of musical comedy," and his statue stands in the heart of the New York theater district. Cohan's early twentieth-century shows and songs captured the spirit of an era when staggering social change gave new urgency to efforts to define Americanism. He was an Irish American who had the audacity to represent himself as the Yankee Doodle emblem of the nation, a vaudevillian who had the nerve to unapologetically climb the ranks and package his lower-brow style as Broadway. With author Elizabeth T. Craft.

Book Discussion | Plantation Goods: A Material History of American Slavery by Seth Rockman

Historian and author Seth Rockman discusses his new book, Plantation Goods: A Material History of American Slavery, with fellow writer Stephanie McCurry. The industrializing North and the agricultural South—that’s how we have been taught to think about the United States in the early nineteenth century. But in doing so, we overlook the economic ties that held the nation together before the Civil War. We miss slavery’s long reach into small New England communities, just as we fail to see the role of Northern manufacturing in shaping the terrain of human bondage in the South. Using plantation goods—the shirts, hats, hoes, shovels, shoes, axes, and whips made in the North for use in the South—historian Seth Rockman locates the biggest stories in American history in the everyday objects that stitched together the lives and livelihoods of Americans—white and Black, male and female, enslaved and free—across an expanding nation. By following the stories of material objects, such as shoes made by Massachusetts farm women that found their way to the feet of a Mississippi slave, Rockman reveals a national economy organized by slavery—a slavery that outsourced the production of its supplies to the North, and a North that outsourced its slavery to the South. Melding business and labor history, Plantation Goods brings northern industrialists, southern slaveholders, enslaved field hands, and paid factory laborers into the same picture. Examining producers and consumers linked in economic and moral relationships across great geographic and political distances, Plantation Goods brings together lines of American history that have for too long been told separately, as slavery and capitalism converge in something as deceptively ordinary as a humble pair of shoes.

Concert | WEVD and the Sounds of Jewish New York (online)

It has been said that WEVD was the soundtrack of Jewish New York for much of the 20th century. Founded in 1927, the city's most popular Yiddish radio station billed itself as "the station that speaks your language." WEVD's original programming featured performances of Yiddish folk and theater music, concert and choral music, cantorials, Hassidic chant, klezmer, and more, much of it composed by its staff of composers and arrangers such as Joseph Rumshinsky, Alexander Olshanetsky, Sholom Secunda, Sam Medoff, Joe Garnett, and Abraham Ellstein. This year the station's massive music library, once nearly lost and destroyed, has been preserved. To mark the occasion, musicians will perform new arrangements from selected pieces, and artists and scholars will discuss the enduring relevance of the station's history and the creative output that it helped produce.
