Discussion | Europe at a Crossroads: The Surge in Antisemitisn (online)

In recent months, Europe has witnessed a disturbing rise in antisemitic incidents, highlighting the urgent need for coordinated responses and proactive strategies. This briefing will bring together leaders and experts to address the current wave of violence and hate targeting Jewish communities across the continent, with a specific focus on the role of social media, and anti-Zionism as catalysts. A particularly alarming incident took place in Amsterdam, where Israeli and Jewish soccer fans were violently attacked following a match, underscoring the vulnerability of Jewish communities even in historically tolerant cities. In cyberspace, antisemitic and anti-Zionist rhetoric has intensified, with social media platforms increasingly hosting hateful content that fuels offline violence. In France, antisemitic graffiti targeting Zionist symbols has appeared in public spaces, while in Germany, Jewish schools and synagogues face heightened security threats. This session will explore how anti-Zionist sentiments often mask deeper antisemitic motives, creating a complex challenge in digital and public spheres alike. Attendees will gain insights into the cross-national trends driving this resurgence, share best practices for countering hate in social media and other digital spaces, and contribute to shaping a unified European response. By addressing both the traditional and digital manifestations of antisemitism, this briefing aims to foster safety and resilience for Jewish communities across Europe.

Lecture | No Monument: Babyn Yar as Site of History, Memory, and Politics (in-person and online)

This talk discusses how the resurfacing of Babyn Yar memory in Kyiv, Ukraine, in the late Soviet period transformed the site into an important battleground of the Cold War. On March 13, 1961, an industrial accident in the heart of Kyiv—the Kurenevka flood—both literally and figuratively brought evidence of Babyn Yar back to the surface after twenty years of silence. The cultural and political reckoning that emerged in its wake, most famously with Yevgeny Yevtushenko’s poem “Babi Yar,” quickly reached audiences across Cold War borders. In the Soviet Union, the poem’s opening line, “No monument stands at Babi Yar,” unsettled a postwar status quo that had relegated the Jewish experience of the war to the political margins. In the West, it forged new connections between Jewish communities across time and space. Focusing on the KGB’s strategies to contain grassroots commemorations of Babyn Yar and control foreign access to the site, the talk follows how events in Kyiv intersected with an emerging global Holocaust consciousness, the call for Jewish emigration among Soviet dissidents, and the movement to “Save Soviet Jewry” abroad. Finally, it will reflect on how monuments and memorials—both those built and not built—become not only sites of memory, but agents of politics. Victoria Smolkin is Associate Professor of History and Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies at Wesleyan University.

Book Discussion | Critique of Critique: Other Ways of Thinking

What is critique? According to the Kantian tradition, it is an investigation of the transcendental conditions for the possibility of thinking and experience. While later critics shifted the focus to material conditions, core metaphysical commitments and procedures of critique remained unchanged. Roy Ben-Shai probes critique as an orientation of thought through its historical manifestations from Plato to the Frankfurt school and present-day critical theory. He asks us to consider what critical thinking is and whether it can assume orientations other than critique.

Book Discussion | Squanto: A Native Odyssey

American schoolchildren have long learned about Squanto, the welcoming Native who made the First Thanksgiving possible, but his story goes deeper than the holiday legend. Born in the Wampanoag-speaking town of Patuxet in the late 1500s, Squanto was kidnapped in 1614 by an English captain, who took him to Spain. From there, Englishmen brought him to London and Newfoundland before sending him home in 1619, when Squanto discovered that most of Patuxet had died in an epidemic. A year later, the Mayflower colonists arrived at his home and renamed it Plymouth. With author Andrew Lipman.
