Conference | Shaping Spaces: Etruscan and Italic Arts

The shaping of space can be thought of by way of buildings and other physical means that altered the environment. It also involves far more complex processes bound to actions and actors, which have shaped spaces in fundamental ways. Speakers talk about urbanism, urbanization, proto-urbanism and think in critical ways about how constituent groups shaped space and how spaces shaped them, looking to the seas and islands that surrounded Etruscan and neighboring spaces.

Lecture | Sonic Shatterzones: Hearing the Intertwined Spaces and Music of Nazi and Soviet Atrocity

The Soviet Union's history can be seen as periods of atrocity, genocide, and warfare. The Soviet Gulag, the Holocaust, and the civilian and military engagement in World War II produced unthinkable mass death in sites across the country for a half-century. Music and sound offer an instant, humanizing, and immersive view of these atrocities. In four case studies, Alexandra Birch, a professional violinist and historian, offers examples of how we can hear the Holocaust, the Gulag, Terror, and exile. Among other things, she will focus on sonic fragment's taken to Tashkent and covertly buried in a violin sonata during a peak of Soviet antisemitism in 1948.

Concert | Polish Composer and Traditional South American Sounds

Warsaw composer and musician Piotr Kurek’s acclaimed LP Smartwoods is a sprawling root system of tiny melodic phrases that loop around subtly evolving instrumental thickets. Kurek takes his cues from early music, baroque, and experimental jazz, entangling his influences with filigree traces of contemporary computer audio. Structured in seven distinct segments, the album blurs its acoustic and electronic elements into an illusory hedge of abstract sound. Kurek will perform his set with an ensemble of three local musicians on synths, guitar, bass, wind instruments and harp, with each player delicately intertwined into the Smartwoods. Following is Chuquimamani-Condor, a multi-disciplinary artist and musician. On their last album, 2023's DJ E, they drew on the traditional drum and ceremonial music of their Pakajaqueño family, fusing vivid, acerbic synths with Andean flutes and the cacophonous rhythms of the Aymara people.
