Book Discussion | Fashion in American Life: Challenging Existing Approaches

An original contribution to fashion studies, Hazel Clark and Lauren Downing Peters's book challenges existing approaches to fashion in America by considering who 'makes' fashion-when, where, and how. Avoiding the usual emphasis on the 'history of fashion' which perpetuates the myth of fashion designers, and New York, as the originators of American fashion, this exploration of the everyday allows us to see American fashion as a form of agency, self-identification, creative engagement, and politics.

Screening | Silent Clowns Film Series: Harold Lloyd and Speedy (1928)

Remembered as the "third genius" of silent comedy, Harold Lloyd was first at the box-office in the 1920s. Speedy (1928) is not as well known as Safety Last (1923) or The Freshman (1925), but is equally funny and shows Lloyd at the peak of his cinematic skills. Set in Manhattan, the films boast some still recognizable New York City locations, as well as vanished icons like old Yankee Stadium and Babe Ruth. This was Lloyd's last silent film, and, along with the previous year's The Kid Brother (1927), was a final summing up of his mastery of the silent comedy feature. One of Lloyd's early one-reel shorts opens the program. The Silent Clowns Film Series is New York's longest-running regularly scheduled silent film showcase. The programming reaches the serious film buff by including rarely-screened titles and rare prints, yet it also introduces kids and new audiences to the classics of the silent screen. Screenings feature live piano accompaniment by MoMA's Ben Model, with an introduction and Q&A by film historians Model and Steve Massa. Registration required.

Dance Performance | Activations: Friday Night Lights - Dance Outdoors

Gathered through an open call by Dia and the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, the program’s participants met with artist Gillian Walsh for a five-week movement course. Taking a contemplative approach to dance, Walsh led participants through a series of exercises focused on cultivating sincerity and a sense of their interiority, deemphasizing virtuosic movement and inviting participants to engage personal memory, fantasy, and conjured space.  The resulting choreography, composed collectively, contains movement ranging from the still to the exuberant. It is performed at the park’s athletic field, a quintessential backdrop of the American imagination.

Concert | Swedish-American Composer and Organist Plays Experimental Interpretations

Stockholm-based American composer and organist Kali Malone returns to New York City to present the organ, choir, and brass pieces from her highly acclaimed album All Life Long. In her hands, experimental minimalist reinterpretations of centuries-old polyphonic compositional methods become portals to new ways of perceiving harmony, structure, and introspection. She will perform on the iconic pipe organ with additional 4-handed organ accompaniment by Stephen O'Malley, together with Anima brass quintet and members of the Choral Chameleon choir. The virtuosic Polish guitarist Raphael Rogiński presents a live performance of his landmark 2015 album, Rogiński Plays Coltrane & Langston Hughes, soon to be reissued by the Unsound imprint. He will present distinct and nuanced interpretations of John Coltrane’s compositions, removing them almost entirely from the jazz context, as well as pieces that he has built around the writing of American poet and social activist Langston Hughes. Joining him on stage is drummer Jim White—of the Dirty Three and a myriad of other projects—as well as vocalist Amirtha Kidambi.
