Book Discussion | On Being Jewish Now: Reflections from Authors and Advocates (in-person and online)

What is it about being Jewish that connects people no matter where we live, how they work or if they even go to synagogue? Food? Culture? Humor? Tradition? History? In the wake of the October 7 tragedy in Israel -- the worst pogrom since the Holocaust -- and the rising antisemitism in the following months, American Jews felt a solidarity that many hadn't known existed. People found themselves speaking out in ways they never had, putting on the Jewish stars they hadn't worn in decades, experiencing a pride they had long forgotten. Now, 75 writers share their funny, poignant, sad and emotional thoughts on that unique bond that reflect our joy and trauma, love, loss and family ties in the new book, On Being Jewish Now. Twenty of those authors will be in a conversation led by the volume's editor, publisher and contributor Zibby Owens.

Concert | Jewish Songs and Dances for Piano (online)

A premiere performance of Joel Engel’s A krants yidishe folks-nigunim (1924): a collection of Jewish folksongs, dances, Hasidic nigunim, and religious melodies in arrangements for piano and four hand piano. Engel’s earlier Jewish Folksongs Volumes I, II, and II were the first published classical compositions to feature Yiddish folksongs. His use of Yiddish folk music in his compositions proved to be influential and inspired the Society for Jewish Folk Music and the composers affiliated with it to create a vast oeuvre of similar work. This collection of 29 pieces will be performed by Ryan MacEvoy McCullough and Sahun Sam Hong.

Symposium | Poetry as Artifact

A symposium devoted to Maria Stepanova's new poem, Holy Winter. This literary symposium brings together the author, her translators and publishers, and literary scholars to reflect on the poem as a literary artifact, a social fact, and a reading experience. How is a poem that relates to the catastrophic events of the day--the pandemic and the war--conceived and written? Maria Stepanova will share her reflections on the creative process. How does the poem reach its readers, in the country of its origin and beyond? What is the role of publishers, editors, translators? What is lost (and gained) in translation? Stepanova's translators and publishers will speak about their work. What poetic themes, instruments and forms are used in this highly innovative work of literature? How do we attend to the many voices speaking in the poem? How do we relate to its complex intertextual fabric? How do the poem's recurrent imagery and metaphors--exile, confinement, war--speak to us about our own experience as we transition from the twentieth to the twenty-first century? Literary scholars will offer their interpretations as well as readerly impressions.

Lecture | Antisemitism History: The Case of Mendel Beilis in Emperial Russia (online)

On March 20, 1911, children playing in a cave near Kiev stumbled upon a horrific sight: the bloodied body of a boy. Following claims from right-wing groups that the murder was a ritual killing, police arrested Menachem Mendel Beilis, a 39-year-old Jewish factory manager, despite lacking direct evidence. Beilis's trial in 1913 quickly garnered international attention. Although the jury acquitted him, they suggested the crime bore the characteristics of a ritual murder. In his book, Blood Libel in Late Imperial Russia: The Ritual Murder Trial of Mendel Beilis, Robert Weinberg examines the motivations behind the tsarist government's framing of Beilis, highlighting the rampant antisemitism in late Imperial Russia. Led by professor of history Robert Weinberg.
