Opening Reception | 48" Standards: Defining Objects

Mel Bochner’s exhibition is a selection of works from his 48″ Standards series conceived in 1969 and executed in brown paper, cardboard, and vinyl. Each Standard features rectangular sheets of brown paper or cardboard arranged to include at least one three-by-four-foot element of space or paper. A 48-inch measurement is recorded twice: once across the rectangle and again along its upper or lower edge. This demarcation goes beyond simple measurement, exploring the limitations of standardized systems in defining or describing objects.  Bochner’s work is exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, The Museum of Modern Art, National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, Whitney Museum of American Art, Tate in London.

Talk | On the Poet Larry Eigner (in-person and online)

The poet Larry Eigner (1927-1996) was a key figure in New American poetry, which grew out of the Black Mountain School and San Francisco Renaissance, and a major influence on the Language poets. Eigner also had cerebral palsy as the result of an accident at birth. It is fortuitous that the poet lived his life in two locations vibrant in both poetics and disability activism. Except for brief periods attending camp and school, he lived with his parents in Swampscott, Massachusetts, until the age of 51. Later, he moved to Berkeley, California, at the height of the disability rights movement. In the 1950s, Eigner attended Camp Jened, which later became famous in the film Crip Camp.
