Book Discussion | When Two or More Are Gathered Together by Neal Slavin

Photographer Neal Slavin and author Kevin Moore discuss the new Damiani edition of Slavin's classic book of color group portraits on the 50-year anniversary of the book's first release. Neal Slavin began taking group portraits in the early 1970s, intrigued by the social dynamics of groups and the motivations behind their formation. While the pictures themselves were most often posed, Slavin instructed his subjects to arrange themselves, allowing natural hierarchies and indications of status to emerge. When the series was first published in 1976, it was recognized as an instant landmark in the emerging field of color photography, a field that included photographers such as Stephen Shore and William Eggleston. Regarded as something of a deadpan stunt, yet framed as a serious social experiment, When Two or More Are Gathered Together was appreciated for its surprising insights into American social life. This expanded fifty-year anniversary edition of When Two or More Are Gathered Together (Damiani Books) revisits the urgent question of social unity in the United States and includes new subjects—dogs, fencers and chambermaids—some photographed as recently as 2023. An essay by art historian Kevin Moore offers historical context for this timely and relevant body of early color photography. At this event, Neal Slavin talks to Kevin Moore about the making of the original series and the thought processes guiding this new edition.

Book Club | Seed to Plate, Soil to Sky: Modern Plant-based Recipes Using Native American Ingredients by Lois Ellen Frank

Some food historians say that 1491 to 1493 are the years the world began, in terms of food, that is. Prior to 1492, eight plants—corn, beans, squash, chile, tomato, potato, vanilla, and cacao—existed only in the Americas. Italy didn't have the tomato; Ireland didn't have the potato, nor Russia the vodka distilled from it; and there were no chiles in South Asia. When these ingredients crossed the ocean, they drastically transformed the way the Old World would eat and cook forever. Yet the average American, even those who cook with these foods regularly, doesn't know this history. Seed to Plate, Soil to Sky introduces the splendor and importance of Native culinary history and pairs it with delicious Native American-inspired dishes. Grounded in a primer on Native American cuisine and with a necessary discussion of food sovereignty and sustainability, Seed to Plate, Soil to Sky shares more than 100 nutritious, plant based recipes organized by each of the foundational ingredients. Grounded in Southwestern flavors, recipes like Blue Corn Hotcakes with Prickly Pear Syrup, Three Sisters Stew, and Green Chile Enchilada Lasagna, share the page—and plate—with essential basics like Corn Masa, Red and Green Chile Sauces, and Cacao Spice Rub for a celebration of Native foods

Film | Filmmakers for the Prosecution (2021): Uncovering the Truth for the Nuremberg Trial

Filmmakers for the Prosecution revisits the quest for film evidence that could hold the Nazis accountable at the Nuremberg Trial. The search was led by two American soldiers, Budd and Stuart Schulberg, under the direction of OSS film chief John Ford. The footage they presented in court became part of the official record and continues to shape our understanding of the Holocaust today. Seventy-five years later, French journalist and filmmaker Jean-Christophe Klotz returns to the German salt mines where films were destroyed, uncovers previously unseen footage, and interviews key figures to reveal why the resulting film about the trial--Nuremberg: Its Lesson for Today by Stuart Schulberg--was deliberately suppressed by the U.S. Department of War. Klotz's compelling documentary also explores how these pioneering materials were obtained and raises important questions about documentarians' responsibilities to future generations. For ages 18+; contains graphic footage and imagery that may be upsetting to some viewers. Run time: 59 minutes
