Talk | Robert Morris, America's Original Bailout Czar

There were no second or third choices. In 1781, everyone knew that only one man could possibly save the bankrupt government. Like him or not, and many did not, members of Congress begged the richest man in the country to reverse the worst financial crisis ever to plague the nation. Robert Morris extracted from Congress unprecedented powers, but he delivered. “THE Financier,” as he was called, offered his own personal credit (which people valued) in lieu of Continental currency (which they did not). Why don’t we know more about THE Financier, the man who exercised more control over the government than any president? Now, as we deal with our own financial crisis, the tale of the most powerful civilian of the Founding Era has an eerie resonance and magnetic pull. It is time to tell it. Ray Raphael is author of A People’s History of the American Revolution (2001), The First American Revolution: Before Lexington and Concord (2002), Founding Myths: Stories that Hide our Patriotic Past (2004), and most recently Founders: The People Who Brought You a Nation (2009), which features Robert Morris as one of seven lead characters. Ticket includes admission to the Museum. Talk will be followed by a book sale and signing. Feel free to bring your lunch.

Concert | Open Rehearsal: Orpheus Chamber Orchestra

The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra is a world-renowned, Grammy Award-winning classical music chamber orchestra based in New York City. It is known for its collaborative leadership style, in which the musicians, not a conductor, interpret the score. Orpheus was founded in 1972, by cellist Julian Fifer and a group of fellow musicians who aspired to perform orchestral repertoire using chamber music ensemble techniques. Central to its distinctive personality is its unique practice of sharing and rotating leadership roles. For every work, the members of the orchestra select the concertmaster and the principal players for each section. These players constitute the core group, whose role is to form the initial concept of the piece and to shape the rehearsal process. In the final rehearsals, all members of the orchestra participate in refining the interpretation and execution, with members taking turns listening from the hall for balance, blend, articulation, dynamic range and clarity of expression.

Concert | Listen to “The Auerglass,” a two-person pump organ

The Auerglass is a two-person wooden pump organ designed by the artist Tauba Auerbach with her friend Cameron Mesirow of the band Glasser. The instrument cannot be played alone. It requires two people to play. One player has to pump in order for the other to play and vice versa. There is a four-octave scale that is divided so that each of the two players plays every other note. Auerbach and Mesirow will play a composition written specifically for the instrument. It combines music that Auerbach wrote as a child, songs from Glasser and new material. Ida Falck Øien, who creates the costumes for Glasser, has created special costumes with shifting states for the Auerglass players to wear.

Author Reading | Anthony Flint discusses his book Wrestling with Moses: How Jane Jacobs Took on New York's Master Builder and Transformed the American City

To a young Jane Jacobs, Greenwich Village, with its winding cobblestone streets and diverse makeup, was everything a city neighborhood should be. The activist, writer, and mother of three grew so fond of her bustling community that it became a touchstone for her landmark 1961 book The Death and Life of Great American Cities. But consummate power broker Robert Moses saw things differently: neighborhoods such as Greenwich Village were in need of “urban renewal.” Notorious for exacting enormous human costs, Moses’s plans had never before been halted–not by governors, mayors, or FDR himself, and certainly not by a housewife from Scranton. Wrestling with Moses is the tale of a local battle with far-ranging significance. By confronting Moses and his vision, Jacobs forever changed the way Americans understood the city, and inspired citizens across the country to protest destructive projects in their own communities. Anthony Flint is director of public affairs for the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy in Cambridge. He has been a journalist for over 20 years, primarily at The Boston Globe, where he covered development, urban design, housing, and transportation. His first book was This Land: The Battle over Sprawl and the Future of America. He has been a visiting scholar and Loeb Fellow at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design, and a policy adviser in Massachusetts state government, and is a Citistates Associate.
