Concert | Listen to “The Auerglass,” a two-person pump organ

The Auerglass is a two-person wooden pump organ designed by the artist Tauba Auerbach with her friend Cameron Mesirow of the band Glasser. The instrument cannot be played alone. It requires two people to play. One player has to pump in order for the other to play and vice versa. There is a four-octave scale that is divided so that each of the two players plays every other note. Auerbach and Mesirow will play a composition written specifically for the instrument. It combines music that Auerbach wrote as a child, songs from Glasser and new material. Ida Falck Øien, who creates the costumes for Glasser, has created special costumes with shifting states for the Auerglass players to wear.

Screening | Filipino Film: Adolfo Alix Jr.’s Adela (2008)

To celebrate her eightieth birthday, Adela wants nothing more than a meal with her children and family. But as the widow goes about her day preparing and shopping—often stopping to help out her fellow slum-dwellers—the interminable wait for the celebration starts to seem futile. In a stylistic break from today’s characteristically energetic, fast-moving Filipino cinema, Alix trains his camera with profound and moving results. The film is a tribute both to the quiet dignity and indomitable spirit of its titular character 88 min. In Tagalog with English subtitles.

Opening Reception | Paintings: Fahamu Pecou's Blak Presidential: The Inauguration

Pecou's new works look at the cultural obsession with the First Couple from an American cultural viewpoint. These stunning acrylic canvases dip into modern graphic art and imagery, combining the photogenic appeal of the Obamas with the mass appeal of hip hop, MTV video imagery and the stylings of Rolling Stone magazine. The Brooklyn-born, Atlanta-based artist investigates stereotypes of black masculinity and notions of fine art, commenting on how the Obamas have redefined and reshaped the image of black Americans. By juxtaposing gestures and embedded slangisms, Pecou comments on the distortions created by the media and how new stereotypes are being formed based on carefully choreographed images of the Obamas released by the White House.
