Dance Performance | Collaborative Art: iLAND presents SIP (Sustained Immersive Process)/watershed

The interdisciplinary Laboratory for Art Nature and Dance presents this investigation into the NYC watershed viewed as a meta-choreography of the historical, geological, and cultural layers of the interaction of built and natural phenomena of water in the region. Choreographer and iLAND Artistic Director Jennifer Monson, Sound Artist Chris Cogburn, Costume Designer Katrin Schnabl, Architect Kate Cahill, and Choreographer/Dancer Maggie Bennett will create a process that interweaves their forms through listening, observing, moving in and with water affecting the NYC watershed – from along the edges of NYC’s shoreline to the headwaters of the Hudson in the upper reaches of the Adirondacks. The SIP collaborators invite the public into their process through a dynamic structure that frames and reflects the constantly shifting nature of the watershed. The event builds a system of listening, observing, and moving that creates a porous and fluid experience - the intimacy of which is designed to sustain an immersive experience for both the public and the artists. The performance will last 30 minutes and is limited to eight people.

Opening Reception | An Exhibition of Kaburaki Wine Glasses

Kaburaki Wine Glasses beautifully marry Japanese traditional aesthetics with solid German craftsmanship, resulting in stemware that is unsurpassed in originality. Kaburaki of Japan and Spiegelau of Germany have collaborated to make Kaburaki original wine glasses, seamlessly fusing the artistic tastes of two very different cultures. The series of unique glasses were created by melding the European wine arts and culture with the multicolored, over glaze painting of Kutani technique. The glass bowl is by Spiegelau, the world famous German crystal glass factory, and the stem by Kutani porcelain, which possesses rich historical importance dating back 370 years of artisanal craft in Kanazawa, Japan.

Concert | The Other Mendelssohn: Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel

The third of a 3-concert series featuring the major works of Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, a composer of the 19th-century who was often overshadowed by her brother, Felix Mendelssohn. Recognized in The New York Times as “the dean of Mendelssohn scholars in the United States,” R. Larry Todd curates the series. Hensel wrote more than 450 works, most of which were not discovered until late in the 20th-century. This will be the first time in NYC all of her major works will be performed. The series concludes with Das Jahr, Zwölf Charakterstücke für Fortepiano. Das Jahr (“The Year”) was composed by Hensel in 1841 and is a collection of 12 pieces – each piece depicting one month. Hensel’s husband, painter Wilhelm Hensel, illustrated the manuscript, and the illustrations will be projected during the performance.

Jazz | World Music: Malika Zarra

Self-described as a “multi-cultural shape-shifter,” Moroccan jazz singer, composer, and producer Malika Zarra finds common ground in such uncommon places as Arabic working-class blues, religious trance music, and American jazz. As it turns out, all three employ improvisation, which you’re as likely to hear whizzing around the guitar and bass as you are the oud, dumbek, and bender.
