Opening Reception | 4 Exhibitions: Beyond Borders / Degrees of Abstraction / The Rhythm of Color / Bloom

In Beyond Borders, innovative and stunning works span the range of artistic expression. Each artist imparts a little piece of their Canadian spirit to their individual style. Featuring Aimeé, Bisa Bennett, Anna Duyunova, Sherrard Grauer, Shelley Hakonson, Malu, Colin Marcoux, Annabelle Marquis, Pascale-Nancy, MRandle, Monique Robert, Peter Schulz, Tone, Danielle Tremblay, Gaëtan Trottier, VéroniKaH, and William Wilson. Degrees of Abstraction is a poignant portrayal of visual dissonance and harmony transmitted through complex composition and transcendent design. Featuring Nissim Ben Aderet, Kristina Garon, Claudia Manperl, João Paramés, Ella Prakash, and Henriette Tibbs. The Rhythm of Color displays the expressive central role that an artist’s palette plays in the creation of a painting. Featuring Lee Chabot, Sandy Frazier, Yuta Strega, and Cordès Yorio. Tamara Rosen’s exquisite paintings in Bloom hearken back to the idea of the artist as a naturalist. She has an incredible sense for texture and how it varies depending on lighting conditions. Rosen’s brushwork infuses subjects with an elemental rhythm that comes alive with energy. Gradations of color provide a nearly sculptural influence to each work; whether it be the scales of a fish or the petals of a flower, these minute variations lend an air of realism to a style that often approaches Impressionism.

Opening Reception | Paintings and Prints by Alex Blau

Blau's geometric paintings draw from a variety of sources and have unexpected associations. Their intricate surfaces recall the hallucinatory sweetness of candy packaging, the natural beauty of flowers and historical decorative motifs like quilting and Islamic tile. By variously utilizing graphic languages associated with disposable consumer goods, computer generated architectures and unfolding mandalas, Blau's work both points to abstractions open-ended possibility and highlights its incorporation into mass culture. With lines that cross, twist and turn, patterns emerge that form a rhythmic mosaic of colors and shapes in the world.

Lecture | Speculative and Deliberative Reason

Alessandro Ferrara of the University of Rome will present a lecture. Reason – its nature, inner structure, functioning and locus – has captured the attention of philosophers ever since Plato’s times. One could write a history of Western philosophy from the angle of the different ways in which reason has been understood: reason or Logos as part and parcel of a cosmic order, reason as distinctive of the human, reason as a divine gift that makes us “in God's image”, reason as the master or the servant of the human passions, reason as a faculty of the mind, reason as the source of freedom, reason as emerging from history and driving history, reason as pragmatic problem-solving, reason as communication or as constituting a space where reasons in the plural are offered and assessed. What more can be said about reason that hasn’t been said thus far?

Kimmelman will read from a memoir that reanimates the Park Slope neighborhood of Fifth Avenue when he was a teen, when this now-gentrified neighborhood of restaurants and boutiques resembled Hubert Selby’s Red Hook. Jazz | Listening Party with Loren Schoenberg

This interview/discussion series invites audiences to listen to new jazz albums while also meeting and hearing from the artists who recorded them. Hosted by Ken Druker, the programs are videotaped. The third Listening Party of the 2010-2011 season is with Loren Schoenberg, Executive Director of the National Jazz Museum in Harlem, who discusses and plays music from the recently-discovered Savory Collectionr. On August 19, the National Jazz Museum in Harlem announced the acquisition of this historic collection of never-before-heard recordings, including live performances of great jazz icons from 1935-1941. The collection of 975 aluminum and vinyl discs, over 100 hours of material, was created by William Savory, a recording engineer and Harvard-educated physicist. Savory worked as at a radio transcription service in New York between 1935 and 1941 and used the equipment his job afforded him to record hundreds of hours of material directly off the radio. The collection includes live performances by Coleman Hawkins, Count Basie, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Lester Young, Lionel Hampton, Fats Waller, Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman and others. The quality of the discs is extraordinary for the time, as most jazz enthusiasts in the 1930s did not have the access to professional equipment that Savory enjoyed. Schoenberg discovered the collection after a 24 year cultivation that started with his meeting William Savory in 1980. Savory died in 2004 and Schoenberg acquired the discs in April, 2010 for the museum through Savory's heir, Eugene Desavouret.

Symposium | Where is Ana Mendieta?

September 8, 2010 marked 25 years since artist Ana Mendieta’s fatal fall, naked, from the window of the 34th floor apartment she shared with her husband of just eight months, the renowned sculptor, Carl Andre. The symposium will reveal vital aspects of Mendieta’s iconoclastic earth, body, performance, site-specific and visual art works, while addressing her influences, legacy, and the era of Feminist Art from which she emerged. This will be the first symposium to explicitly address the debate surrounding her tragic death and what many believe to be Andre’s unjust acquittal of her murder. Panelists include: Kat Griefen, Director of the A.I.R. Gallery; Genevieve Hyacinthe, Professor of Contemporary, African/Afro-Atlantic Art History at Purchase College (SUNY); José Esteban Muñoz, Chair, Associate Professor, Performance Studies; Carolee Schneemann, Multidisciplinary Artist, Author, Mendieta’s friend and ‘aesthetic sister’; Diana Taylor, Founding Director of the Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics.
