Opening Reception | Multimedia Works: Andisheh Avini's Screw, Spread, Slip, Suck, Stab, Fall, Cross and Writhe

Combining Frank Stella's pattern pieces from the 1960s and an old traditional craft called marquetry, Avini creates his latest series of arresting abstractions. The tile style here was initially used as accenting in pre-Islamic architecture, but now mostly for trinkets and souvenirs. Fabricated in Iran and contrasted by silkscreens of the American hostage crisis, they reveal the irreconcilable tensions between Avini's homeland and adopted country.

Opening Reception | New Sculpture & Works on Paper by Charlie Hewitt

As drawing is the basis of all of Hewitt’s art, the show will also include a collection of small works on paper from his Illuminations series. In Hewitt’s new sculptural work, hammers, saw blades, chains and dice--symbolic language of the artist’s working class background and Roman Catholic upbringing--are synthesized and assembled into playful, edgy and often elegant lines and shapes that appear to be abstract drawings dancing in space. Hewitt’s work is in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY; Museum of Modern Art, NY; Whitney Museum of American Art, NY, New York Public Library, NY; Brooklyn Museum, NY; Library of Congress, D.C.; Portland Museum of Art, ME; and many others. The artist lives and works in Portland, Maine.

Concert | Tatiana Kochkareva, Moscow-born Singer-Songwriter

Kochkareva studied voice with a student of the great Russian composer Dimitri Shostakovich. As it turns out, that auspicious beginning has fully played out—if not in sardonic symphonies, then in a light-footed brand of songwriting informed by Kochkareva’s ocean-spanning life. Her voice eschews indie preciousness for richer timbres, bringing a worldly depth to songs about everything from personal triumph and tragedy to social graces and dreams. Kochkareva's performance marks the release of the singer/songwriter's stirring third EP Roses.
