Forum | An Evening with Families of US Terror Suspects, Hosted by Danny Glover, Wallace Shawn, and Others

As the tenth anniversary of September 11th is commemorated across the country, most public attention to the civil liberties and human rights abuses of the US ‘War on Terror’ still focuses overseas – to the abuses at Guantánamo, Bagram, and CIA rendition sites. Renowned human rights lawyer Gareth Peirce, along with stage and screen actors Danny Glover, Wallace Shawn, and Kathleen Chalfant, and 2011 PEN/Faulkner Award winner Deborah Eisenberg will co-host an evening focused on the stories of families whose loved ones are suffering rights abuses in terrorism cases being prosecuted within the American federal judicial system. Family members will tell their own stories of the human and civil rights violations here in US courts and prisons – stories of the inhumane conditions of confinement terror suspects face pre-trial and post-conviction; of over-reaching material support charges often accompanied by flimsy evidence; of years of intrusive and often illegal government surveillance; of FBI informants disrupting mosques and instigating conspiracies. Featured speakers will include family members of the Newburgh Four, Fahad Hashmi, Lynne Stewart, the Holy Land Five, Tarek Mehanna, the Fort Dix Five, Ahmed Abu-Ali, and Shifa Sadequee among others.

Author Reading | Punk singer Henry Rollins reads from his book Occupants

10/14, 7pm Henry Rollins, author of in conversation with musician Thurston Moore For the past twenty-five years, Henry Rollins has searched out the most desolate corners of the Earth-from Iraq to Afghanistan, Thailand to Mali, and beyond-articulating his observations through music and words, on radio and television, and in magazines and books. Though he's known for the raw power of his expression, Rollins has shown that the greatest statements can be made with the simplest of acts: to just bear witness, to be present. In Occupants, Rollins invites us to do the same. The book pairs Rollins's visceral full-color photographs-taken in Bangladesh, Burma, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Northern Ireland, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and elsewhere over the last few years-with writings that not only provide context and magnify the impact of the images but also lift them to the level of political commentary.

Screening | 2 Films by John Akomfrah: Seven Songs for Malcolm X / The Last Angel of History

In conjunction with the theatrical premiere of John Akomfrah's The Nine Muses at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), this is the the U.S. theatrical premiere of two foundational films by the British-Ghanaian filmmaker. Seven Songs for Malcolm X (1993, 52 min.) - An homage to the inspirational African-American leader. Seven Songs for Malcolm X collects testimonies, eyewitness accounts and dramatic reenactments to tell the life, legacy, loves, and losses of Malcolm X. Featuring interviews with Malcolm X's widow Betty Shabazz, Spike Lee, and many other. The Last Angel of History (pictured, 1996, 45 min.) - An examination of the relationships between Pan-African culture, science fiction, intergalactic travel, and computer technology, this Afrofuturist cinematic essay posits science fiction--from alien abduction to genetic engineering--as a metaphor for the Pan-African experience of forced displacement, cultural alienation, and otherness. Akomfrah's analysis is rooted in an exploration of the works of artists such as funkmaster George Clinton and his Mothership Connection, Sun Ra's use of extraterrestrial iconography, and the writings of black science fiction authors Samuel R. Delaney and Octavia Butler.

Theater | Makbet, Theatre Group Dzieci’s Fearless Adaptation of Macbeth

You have not seen anything like Dzieci's Makbet. A Gypsy tribe greets you with song and dance, drinks and divination then embarks on the wild, whirlwind of a ritual, which is their show. An immersion beneath the skin of Shakespeare, it is also an explosion of the art of storytelling. Instead of a program with the usual actor bios, you're handed 6 Rules of Engagement which include, among several points, that “Actors must know the entire text” and “Three actors alone must play all the roles." Before the play begins, the cast tells fortunes and encourages the audience to eat and drink to get in the mood. Glasses and utensils are nowhere to be seen; straight from the bottle and bits off the hunk is the way. The "stage" is somewhat smaller to the average living room carpet (in fact, it is a living room carpet) where sits a large kettle, put to good use, among other things, as the witch's cauldron. A half dozen candles illuminate the space, with hand-held miner’s lamps used to great effect as the only other source of light. Dzieci's Gypsy rendition of Macbeth comes alive through words and gestures, dance-like movement and choral singing, weaving rhythms and chants together with haunting melodies to achieve otherworldly harmonies. This ageless tale of greed, corruption, omens and foul deeds, is told through the unflinching performance of a handful of actors who take turns spontaneously trading off parts at the drop of a hat (literally), creating a palpable level of immediacy and danger. Propelled by the energy and acumen of the cast, the story moves feverishly along, fervently following the “6 Rules of Engagement.”
