Talk | Artist Talk: Spencer Sweeney

Spencer Sweeney assumes the roles of artist, club owner, and musician to build a practice that falls intentionally between the cracks of any qualifiable genre. His explosively colorful collaged paintings and cartoonish drawings constitute one part of a larger body of work based on his persona. This places him within a tradition of artists, such as Martin Kippenberger, who, in cultivating outrageous personalities and shifting rapidly between artistic styles, sought an expanded room to maneuver not otherwise afforded by the gallery system.

Opening Reception | Bach Suites in the Dark, a 'Concert Exhibition'

Cellist Augustin Maurs's Bach Suites in the Dark offers a unique approach to Bach’s Cello Suites. After of years of investigation, the Suites are removed from the concert hall and placed in an unilluminated space, in which the cellist repeatedly plays them over a period of ten days. Through the extended time frame and the elimination of any visual input, the listener and the playing musician are unified within the same visual and musical space. Originally conceived as studies, Bach’s Cello Suites are a series of dances written around 1720. Although unaccompanied, they are expansive polyphonic musical masterpieces, considered both the beginning and culmination of the cello repertoire. Uncertainty about the original creative intentions of the Suites invites perpetual debate and allows imaginative free reign for redefining the environment in which they are played. Bach Suites in the Dark removes the Suites from the concert hall explores their malleability and the notion of practice in which they are rooted. Closing Artist Talk: October 27, 6:00pm. Concert Exhibition: October 18, 5:00-8:00pm October 19, 3:00-7:00pm October 20, 3:00-7:00pm October 23, 5:00-8:00pm October 24, 5:00-8:00pm October 25, 5:00-8:00pm October 26, 3:00-7:00pm October 27, 3:00-6:00pm

Lecture | Frontiers in Jewish Studies: The Clever Ox, the Escaping Elephant, and Other Talmudic Animals

Is Judaism good or bad for animals? Beth Berkowitz hopes to bring us beyond this reductive question, with its frequent focus on the first two chapters of Genesis and Jewish dietary laws, to offer instead a more complex approach to the animal in Judaism and to spotlight some less predictable Jewish texts. Professor Berkowitz discusses the emerging field of scholarship called animal studies and considers how this discipline might crosspollenate with Jewish studies (specifically rabbinics) in order to provide a heightened understanding of both fields. Concert | Acousmatic Sound Concert with Carver Audain

Carver Audain (b. 1981) composes music in the Acousmatic tradition, which, as defined by French composer and theorist Pierre Schaefer, refers to “a sound that one hears without seeing the causes behind it.” He is a self-taught pianist, his earliest works are explorations in harmonics utilizing the piano, electronic organ, guitar and cymbals. Materially, he produces audio using digital signal processing and editing techniques on a variety of environmental and instrumental recordings. His recent works explore harmonic structures utilizing the “slow change music” method. In a live setting, he arranges and manipulates this material into situation-specific compositions. Sonically, he produces an array of gradually shifting sound fields that merge and transform within their physical surroundings.
