Symposium | Da Ponte Day: Power and Seduction

In 1805, at the age of 56, Lorenzo da Ponte (1749-1838) left “Old Europe”, to emigrate to the United States, where he lived until his death. Da Ponte tried to establish Italian culture in New York: as private teacher, as bookseller at the Broadway, as editor and author, as co-impresario of an Italian opera enterprise, and as teacher of Italian language and literature at the Columbia College. In 1826, Da Ponte and Mozart’s Don Giovanni was performed in New York at the Park Theater. In that very year Da Ponte edited three of his libretti written in Vienna during the reign of Joseph II, a decisive selection of his theatrical work: Figaro (1786) and Don Giovanni (1787) written for Mozart, as well as Axur, re d’ Ormus (1788) written for Antonio Salieri and one of the most successful operas at the end of the 18th century.

Talk | ‘The Turks Were Killing the Body, the Austrians Kill the Soul’: Suffering as a Patriotic Sentiment in Bosnia, 1840-1914

In the wake of Romanticism, early nationalist projects proclaimed a new age of happiness of the folk, yet by the middle of the nineteenth century, national activists across Europe were busily chronicling the agonizing pain of their "miserable homelands." How did new literatures dedicated to national wounds come about? What can historians do with the vast archives of national suffering that patriotic activists produced over the course of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries? Building on the history of emotions, this talk analyzes and traces the Croatian and Serbian national activist strategies devoted to documenting and publicizing the suffering of the Bosnian peasants during late Ottoman and Habsburg rules (ca. 1840-1914). Instead of dismissing suffering as a mere rhetorical convention, this talk argues that the monumental body of literature on this national suffering carried immense political significance, underpinning the constitution and mobilization of South Slavic nationalist sentiments throughout the nineteenth century. Speaker Edin Hajdarpašić is Assistant Professor of History at Loyola University Chicago.

Park Walk | The High Line Tour

The area around the High Line Park was a vital business district of New York City, supplying fresh fruits, French Cheeses and Russian caviar as well as fresh meats to City markets. The hustle and bustle of the streets induced the City to elevate the railroad trains delivering goods to the commercial buildings. When interstate truck traffic made the railway outdated, it fell into ruin, only to be regenerated as a park.
