Symposium | Legacies of the Italian Occupation in Ethiopia

This symposium examines the legacies of the Italian occupation of Ethiopia as experienced by Ethiopians. In Ethiopia, visual and storytelling cultures have been main vehicles of postcolonial expression. Lecture | Feast and Famine: Ethos and Place in American Food Writing

At the height of her career, Clementine Paddleford was the most widely read and respected food journalist in America. She traveled thousands of miles each year, often piloting her own plane, collecting recipes and culinary folklore, and publishing her findings in This Week, the Sunday syndicated magazine of her newspaper, The New York Herald Tribune. Although Paddleford’s fame was eclipsed by later writers and chefs who were able to capitalize on the reach of radio and television, she remains a fascinating figure, credited by many, including James Beard, with introducing readers to the concept of “American regional cooking.” This presentation will situate Paddleford’s work and legacy within some of the other circulating discourses of her time. Speaker: Erin Branch is currently Assistant Teaching Professor at Wake Forest University in Winston Salem, NC where she teaches courses in writing and rhetoric.

Opening Reception | Zarina's Descending Darkness: New Prints, Works on Paper, Sculpture

For nearly half a century, Zarina has explored the notion of home, be it the space between four walls, the familiar script of a mother tongue, or the constancy of the horizon line. Her life and the places that define it are the subject of her art, and her particular story – that of an immigrant, a traveler, and a citizen of the world – is one that resonates widely. Best known as a printmaker, Zarina also creates sculptural installations, collages, and other unique works on paper. Her compositions are precise and refined yet never austere by virtue of carefully chosen materials such as handmade paper, gold leaf, and sumi ink. Paper is fundamental to her practice and as evidenced by the impressive 50-part portfolio Folding House, it can be manipulated in countless ways. In each of these collages, fragments of paper from discarded projects are torn, cut, dyed, gilded, and burnt to represent home in all its strength and fragility. As a set, it also constitutes an index of Zarina’s previous meditations on the house and the title alludes to a kind of closure.

Lecture | Stripping Stars: The Exciting Lives and Untimely Demise of Stars Near Supermassive Black Holes - Plus Stargazing

With post-doctoral researcher Nicholas Stone. At the center of almost every galaxy sits a supermassive black hole, with a mass between a million and a billion times that of our own sun. These behemoths are usually difficult to observe, but on rare occasions will eat an unlucky, nearby star. This talk will discuss the agonizing demise of stars that are torn apart by hungry supermassive black holes, and how astronomers use their death throes to learn about important questions in astrophysics and Einstein's theory of general relativity. This lecture will be followed by guided star-gazing with telescopes (weather permitting).

Film | Documentary Double Feature: Che Guevara's Time in Congo

Tatu: Che In Congo, Jorges Fuentes, 1997, 56 min. - In 1965, Cuba sent an expeditionary force to eastern Congo to train Marxist rebels in the fight against Congo's American-backed central government. The Cuban Expedition was led by none other than Che Guevara who, under the code-name "Tatu" ("Three" in Swahili) cemented himself a place in Congo's history. Fuentes' rarely screened film is an account of Che's travels and political influence, as told by the Cubans and Congolese who knew and fought alongside him. Freddy Ilanga: Che's Swahili Translator, Katrin Hansing, 2013, 24 min. - Freddy Ilanga, a fifteen-year-old Congolese youth, became Che Guevara's personal Swahili teacher and translator during the Cuban Expedition to Congo. After seven intense months by Che's side, the Cuban authorities sent Freddy to Cuba, displacing him from his family and abruptly changing his life. Hansing's film captures Ilanga's recollections of his time with Che, and his reconnecting with his family after 40 years of separation. Followed by post-screening discussion with guests TBA.
