Discussion | Palaces and Ruins of Third-Way Modernization: The Legacy of Socialist Architecture and Urbanism in Yugoslavia

After WWII, many Austrian intellectuals perceived the Third Way of Tito's Yugoslavia during the cold war period as a familiar but more radical version of political and economic neutrality in between the East and West. For the Austrian middle class Yugoslavia's Coastline became one of their favorite summer tourist destinations, and for Architects the explicit modern style of the new WWII monuments, buildings, urban and tourist developments an alien but exotic attraction – a 1:1 museum of superb late-modern design, built thanks to vast support from the West. In the wake of the political change after the fall of Communism, the disintegration war, and the privatization of business, many urban developments and outstanding buildings have been economically and physically restructured, in a myriad of ways, leaving a legacy of deserted ruins, cautious renovations, exorbitant conversions, and radical densification. But the more these built monuments of modernization are endangered to vanish the more they are rediscovered and re-appreciated by architects and intellectuals today. With Vladimir Kulić, Michael Zinganel, Srdjan Jovanović Weiss. Moderated by William Menking.

Lecture | Speaking Out or Healing the Wounds: Doctors Without Borders' Dilemma

Doctors Without Borders have adopted the mission of "tmoignage", or testimony. It means to speak on behalf of the people they assist and thoroughly report the situation on the ground while remaining impartial. Naturally, these testimonies are used as means of advocacy. Doctors Without Borders renounced the silent diplomacy embraced by other humanitarian agencies and it constitutes a respected voice for the victims of natural and man-made disasters worldwide. This mission oftentimes produces tensions with the local power structures (government, armed groups) and it can threaten the very existence of MSF missions is several places. Laurence Binet, director of studies of the MSF Foundation (based in Paris) will be discussing what are the tensions between the mission of testimony and the diplomacy necessary to keep operating in the field.

Book Discussion | Rediscovering Antal Szerb’s Italy

Celebrate the US paperback release of Hungarian writer Antal Szerb’s novel, Journey by Moonlight and the memoir that provided the basis for the book, Szerb’s The Third Tower. The Third Tower is a beautiful, slim travelogue following Szerb's journey through Italy in 1936—a journey overshadowed by the coming war and charged with intense personal nostalgia. Szerb, who was in his mid-thirties at the time, was later deported—in late 1944—to a concentration camp where he died months later.brbr The Third Tower is a rich companion text to Journey by Moonlight, a masterful novel set in Italy, which Szerb wrote following his travels there. It’s equal parts dark comedy, madcap adventure tale, thriller, and romance, and the book is considered by many to be Szerb’s masterpiece and a classic of twentieth-century literature. Novelist Julie Orringer and NYRB Classics editorial director Edwin Frank will discuss the novel and the memoir as well as Antal Szerb’s prolific career and tragically short life.
