Workshop | Cheeses of Europe Event: Meet Mimolette

Mimolette, the French cheese that can be carved like a pumpkin, is the star of this 4-day extravaganza. The Cheeses of Europe will transform the place into a haunted house, complete with Mimolette cheese carvings by world-class sculptor Krai. Hourly cheese carving workshops will be held and treats will be served. Krai is a world-renowned cheese sculptor who was born in a tiny village in Thailand. He moved to Bangkok and was greatly influenced by the members of the Royal Family, all of whom only ate intricately carved fruit. When Krai went to Paris, it was not lost on him that Parisians fancied cheese as much as the people of Thailand revered fruit. Inspired, Krai began to carve French cheese and voila! A career handcrafting exquisite carvings from cheese was born. Takes place Oct. 28-31.

Talk | Mexican Tertulia. An Event of 7-Minute Lightning Talks Featuring Lens-Based Artists of Mexican Heritage

It is a particularly fraught time to be a Mexican in the United States. This event is a celebration of Mexican culture during an election season that has generated great cross-cultural mistrust. Organizers Martha Naranjo Sandoval and Groana Melendez are interested in showing the variety of Mexican experience, the important role of Mexicans in the community, and how being of Mexican heritage influences the practice of different artists in order to take ownership of the conversation. The format will consist of featured talks by established and mid-career artists and then an open mic period where Mexican artists in the audience are encouraged to present a prepared 7-minute talk. You are encouraged to prepare your talk in advance. You will be able to register to present during the event, but if you wish to ensure you have a spot please send an email to baxterst@cameraclubny.org. Presenters include Irma Bohórquez-Geisler, Karla Carballar, Gabriel Garcia Roman, Alan Ruiz, and Cinthya Santos Briones among others. Tour | Dark Side of the High Line Tour

The skeletal remains of the High Line’s elevated tracks set the perfect scene for a spooky evening. Join a journey to the creepier side of New York City’s most unique park. On this tour you’ll hear tales of the strange eccentric who lived below the tracks and saved them from demise, the curse of a West Side Cowboy who fell to his death from the elevated track, and the children who haunt the street formerly known as Death Avenue. If the moon hangs right perhaps you’ll witness the spectacle of a ghostly ship floating down the Hudson River; is it the long forgotten crew of Henry Hudson’s Half-Moon warning sailors not to go to sea? Or is it Captain Kidd protecting the treasure he buried on Liberty Island? Venture at your own risk through the dark side of High Line.
