Award-winning author Malaka Gharib is joined by fellow author Hannah Bae for a discussion of Gharib's new book It Won't Always Be Like This. A chronicle of growing up with her Egyptian father's new family, forging unexpected bonds and navigating adolescence in an unfamiliar country, It Won't Always Be Like This is a touching time capsule of Malaka Gharib's childhood memories -- each summer a fleeting moment in time -- and a powerful reflection on relationships, values, family, and what happens when it all collides. Malaka Gharib is the author of I Was Their American Dream, winner of the 2020 Arab American Book Award. Her comics and writing have been published in NPR, the Los Angeles Times, Catapult, The Seventh Wave Magazine, The Nib, Saveur Magazine, The Believer Magazine and The New Yorker. Hannah Bae is a freelance journalist and nonfiction writer. She is the 2020 nonfiction winner of the Rona Jaffe Foundation Writers' Award as well as the 2021 Peter Taylor Fellow for The Kenyon Review Writers Workshops. Through 2018 and 2019, Hannah served as president of Asian American Journalists Association's New York chapter and was co-director of AAJA's national mentoring program from 2017-2021.
