Discussion | Harvey Milk: Gay Jewish Icon (online)

Harvey Milk—eloquent, charismatic, and a smart-aleck—was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977, but he had not even served a full year in office when he was shot by a homophobic fellow supervisor. Milk’s assassination at the age of 48 made him the most famous gay man in modern history.  Before finding his calling as a politician, Milk variously tried being a schoolteacher, a securities analyst on Wall Street, a supporter of Barry Goldwater, a Broadway theater assistant, a bead-wearing hippie, the operator of a camera store, and organizer of the local business community in San Francisco. He rejected Judaism as a religion, but he was deeply influenced by the cultural values of his Jewish upbringing and his understanding of antisemitism and the Holocaust.  This program explores Milk’s life, death, and legacy with Lillian Faderman, a distinguished scholar of LGBTQ history and the author of Harvey Milk: His Lives and Death. Faderman will be joined by Eric Marcus, creator of the podcasts Making Gay History and Those Who Were There: Voices From the Holocaust.

Escher: Nature, Science, and Imagination at the North Carolina Museum of Art, on Escher’s math-inspired, mind-bending, and multidimensional “impossible constructions” bridge the boundaries between art and science. His artwork was a precursor to OpArt , and more broadly, an artistic phenomenon that has seeped into the consciousness of contemporary culture.

Opening Reception | A Thousand Other Things: Crowded and Confused Interiors

The fourth exhibition of paintings by Allison Gildersleeve. While previous paintings often lingered on the tangled rocky New England landscape of her youth, with this new series Gildersleeve has shifted her painterly gaze onto crowded and confused interiors, born of this seemingly endless year of stay-at-home suffocation. With a sleight of hand, surfaces peek out from stacks of books, tiny lit hallways beckon from the back, and sailboats from afar bleed into the inside. The overwhelming feeling is of luxuriating in the illogic of painting, but with the stifling sense of being locked in one’s familiar environment, every object and viewpoint refracted from the cumulative hours spent staring at the same spot. The title of the exhibition, “A Thousand Other Things”, could refer to this imaginary multiplying, or to the sense of the many longed for things we may have been denied, the dreams of what will change when the pandemic’s hold abates.

Author Reading | American Hotel: The Waldorf-Astoria and the Making of a Century (online)

Historian David Freeland recounts the history of not just an American hotel, but, arguably, the American hotel. From the opening as the Waldorf at its first location at Fifth Avenue at 33rd Street in 1893, then more than doubling in size in 1897 into the Waldorf-Astoria, the hostelry rose to prominence on the local, national, and international stage. Opening for business on October 1, 1931, the new uptown Waldorf-Astoria struggled through the Depression, but rose to unparalleled prominence in the postwar years. Functioning like an American palace, the Waldorf served as a favored venue for United Nations diplomats and the hotel of choice for American Presidents until its shuttering in 2017. Freeland is also the author of Automats, Taxi Dances and Vaudeville: Excavating Manhattan's Lost Places of Leisure and Ladies of Soul.

Opening Reception | Porous Modes: Group Show

Tender tendrils and fabric-fingers, rock-faces and moss-feet, dreams of all kinds, ghosts, mirrors, stories of crossings - a relentless richness resides in overlaps and blurred boundaries. The works in this exhibition offer an antidote to rigid categories. In an era of isolation, they provide poetic relief by gently puncturing borders, actively creating kinship.

Discussion | Filmmaker Talks About Her Work

Artist Diane Severin Nguyen with curator Sohrab Mohebbi for a conversation on If Revolution Is a Sickness, Nguyen’s solo exhibition. The exhibition is built around the new moving image work. Set in Warsaw, Poland, the film loosely follows the character of an orphaned Vietnamese child who grows up to be absorbed into a South Korean pop-inspired dance group. Widely popular within a Polish youth subculture, K-pop is used by the artist as a vernacular material to trace a relationship between Eastern Europe and Asia with roots in Cold War allegiances.

Author Reading | Soul of the Hurricane: The Perfect Storm and an Accidental Sailor (online)

Nelson Simon's book is an unlikely and harrowing true account of his experience sailing into Hurricane Grace. It was October 1991, and Simon didn’t want to sign up as a last-minute crew member to transport a Norwegian schooner from Brooklyn to Bermuda. But one thing led to another, and there he was. What did it matter that he had practically no sailing experience? The eight other crew members had plenty—they just needed an extra pair of hands. What could possibly go wrong?
