Book Discussion | Masamitsu Shigeta: Dancing Plants

Masamitsu Shigeta presents the book of a series of paintings dedicated to the urban plantlife of Los Angeles, and more specifically, relating these new paintings to music. For the past several years, Shigeta has devoted his practice to the city flora of New York City, which was presented in Los Angeles at Tyler Park Presents this past Spring. Visiting California for the first time left a deep impression. Similar to how a field recorder collects sounds out in the world, Shigeta captured the distinctive silhouettes of palm tree-lined blocks, discordant garbage bins filled with cacti, and passion flowers blooming like radio waves. Shigeta’s paintings record the ambient noises and complex frequencies of his immediate surroundings, allowing them to be replayed in new locations.

Screening | Imagine Science Film Festival (online)

The Imagine Science Film Festival, now in its 15th year, is an experimental interdisciplinary sci-art festival seeking to open new dialogues between scientists, filmmakers, and artists. Over the week of October 15 - 21, through an intersection of genres, subjects, fact and fiction, the festival will be exploring crucial scientific issues through film, panels, and collaborations, such as symbioses, a collaboration involving pairs of scientists and filmmakers who produce a film in one week and screen it on the last day of the festival. This year's theme is Science New Wave. Scientific storytelling is increasingly and fearlessly experimenting in form and style. Scientific stories are becoming more personal and hybrid, tackling issues pertaining both to the individual and the world at-large. How are artists, scientists and educators working together to create singular narratives? The boundaries between scientific data and cinema magic are dissolving. Similar to developing organisms, science films are emerging with new traits and new forms. See link for complete line-up of films and conversations.

Staged Reading | Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew

Join The Instant Shakespeare Company for a reading of the Bard's classic story of the courtship between Petruchio and Katherina, the headstrong, obdurate shrew. Initially, Katherina is an unwilling participant in the relationship; however, Petruchio "tames" her with various psychological and physical torments, such as keeping her from eating and drinking, until she becomes a desirable, compliant, and obedient bride. The Instant Shakespeare readings are set up to make Shakespeare accessible. The readings are usually without rehearsal; instead, they are on-your-feet instantly staged readings where the readers/actors move around as much as they feel comfortable. Readers are encouraged to share with their fellow readers and the audience so that the plays can exist as words and thoughts communicated through space, not just words on the page. Although most of the participants in the Instant Shakespeare readings are actors, all who wish to participate are invited to do so. Generally each reading has a Play Master responsible for casting and those who wish to participate can contact the PM. Sometimes there are still roles open at the reading and audience members can participate.

Discussion | Love Brought Me Through The Holocaust: A Daughter's Memories (online)

Judith Koeppel Steel was born in Berlin, Germany at the beginning of World War II. Her family escaped Germany in 1939 aboard the MS St. Louis, only to be turned away by both Cuba and the United States and sent back to Europe. Her family disembarked in Belgium, and were later imprisoned in Gurs concentration camp. Judith's father arranged for her to be hidden by a French Catholic family for the rest of the war. In 1946, Judith came to New York where she was adopted by her aunt and uncle. Ultimately, she was ordained as a Cantor.
