Interested in learning to play petanque? Stop by the petanque courts for free lessons and casual play. Members of La Boule New Yorkaise (one of the oldest petanque clubs in the U.S.) have been playing in the ark since the 1970s, and will be staffing the courts with expert instructors who are eager to share pétanque with you. Petanque is an outdoor bowling game, similar to bocce, that was developed in the south of France early in the 20th century. It’s a game accessible to varying physical abilities and ages, can be played on more or less any patch of dirt, and is extremely easy to learn. Despite that simplicity, it is a technically and strategically stimulating game that is easy to fall in love with.

Author and photographer Dr. Gabrielle Bendiner-Viani discusses her new book, The Cities We Need: Essential Stories of Everyday Places. It is striking collection of prose and photographs that illustrates how our everyday spaces foster a sense of shared belonging. It also examines both the benefits these spaces provide and the potential losses we face as they become vulnerable to gentrification, major development projects, and the recent pandemic. Bendiner-Viani was a professor of urban studies at the New School, a fellow at the International Center of Photography and the Centre for Urban Community Research at Goldsmiths, University of London. Moderator: Mindy Thompson Fullilove, MD, a social psychiatrist; published over 100 scientific papers and eight books.
