Book Discussion | The Question of Unworthy Life: Eugenics and Germany's 20th Century (in-person and online)

Between 1939 and 1945, Nazi genocide resulted in the deaths of nearly three hundred thousand people with psychiatric conditions or mental disabilities. It wasn't until the 1980s that these murders, along with the sterilizations of around four hundred thousand others labeled as "feeble-minded," were officially recognized as crimes. CUNY Professor of History Dagmar Herzog's new book The Question of Unworthy Life charts this history from its origins in pre-war debates about the value of disabled lives to our continuing efforts to unlearn eugenic thinking today.
