Book Discussion | Great Bars of New York City: Drink Up

In a city of over eight million people, New York City's bars, pubs, dives, speakeasies, and cocktail lounges provide respite from the relentless pace of daily life, offering an intoxicating blend of camaraderie and ambiance. They've even helped to influence major world events over the years, from Fraunces Tavern being turned into George Washington's official headquarters during the Revolutionary War, to the uprising at Stonewall Inn which ignited the queer liberation movement, to the King Cole Bar at the St. Regis Hotel, which features a mural by the early 20th-century painter Maxfield Parrish. Over the past three centuries, the city's fabled watering holes have become the stuff of myth, legend, and lore, immortalized in film, literature, theater, television, and song. In more recent years, they have taken on new life as Gen Zers have remade neighborhood institutions like Fanelli Cafe into the ultimate downtown hangout. Now, at a time when people yearn for personal connection in an increasingly virtual world, these independent, street-level businesses remain vital centers of community. To pay tribute to their importance, photographers James and Karla Murray--the award-winning team behind Store Front NYC--introduce Great Bars of New York City, the inaugural volume in a series devoted to quintessential New York culture and its small businesses.

Discussion | Beyond Neoliberalism

The neoliberal era is coming to an end, but what will replace it? Developing a coherent alternative will require fresh thinking that spans philosophy, economics and political science. This timely conversation will bring together a panel of scholars to explore the ideas that could shape a new economic paradigm. In his new book Free and Equal: A Manifesto for a Just Society, economist and philosopher Daniel Chandler looks to the ideas of John Rawls to reinvigorate liberalism and develop a new model of capitalism that would genuinely work for all. But is Rawls the thinker we need right now? What would a truly just economy look like? And how could we bring it about? The panel will include Daniel Chandler (London School of Economics), Daniel Luban (Columbia) and Seyla Benhabib (Columbia). Suresh Naidu will chair and moderate the discussion.

Book Discussion | Planes Flying Over a Monster by Daniel Saldana Paris

In ten intimate essays, Daniel Saldana Paris explores the cities he has lived in, each one home to a new iteration of himself. In Mexico City he’s a young poet eager to prove himself. In Montreal —an opioid addict desperate for relief. In Madrid—a lonely student seeking pleasure in grotesque extremes. These now diverging, now coalescing selves raise questions: Where can we find authenticity? How do we construct the stories that define us? What if our formative memories are closer to fiction than truth? At this event, writer Daniel Saldana Paris will discuss his new book with Chloe Cooper Jones.

Discussion | Rethinking the Statue of Liberty with Expert Panelists and Tony Nominee Anna Deavere Smith (in-person and online)

When the Statue of Liberty was installed with great fanfare, speeches, and a celebration of close to 1 million in 1886, no one mentioned immigration, nor did they mention abolition. The association with immigration only came with the passage of decades, and the arrival of millions of immigrants. The formative connection to abolition, the original inspiration for the Statue, was barely known at the time and had long been obscured. Expert panelists resituate the story of this iconic statue: the Pulitzer Prize and Tony nominated actress and playwright Anna Deavere Smith who will bring some of the original texts around Lady Liberty to life. Writer Clint Smith, historian Edward Berenson, and sociologist Nancy Foner will explore the tensions and contradictions inherent in the Statue's symbolism, how the Statue's meaning shaped American history, and how our current moment reflects the debates during Lady Liberty's first decade. Dr. Annie Polland, President of the Tenement Museum, will moderate the discussion.

Book Discussion | Playground by Pulitzer Prize Winner Richard Powers (In Person AND Online!)

Playground is the latest novel from the Pulitzer Prize-winning and New York Times best-selling author of The Overstory and Bewilderment. Four lives are drawn together in a sweeping panoramic novel that travels from Chicagoland to the California coast to the South Pacific. A celebrated ocean adventurer, an artist, and two childhood friends who bonded over a 3000-year-old board game converge on the history-scarred island of Makatea in French Polynesia, whose deposits of phosphorus once helped to feed the world. Now the tiny atoll has been chosen for humanity's next adventure: a plan to send floating, autonomous cities out onto the open sea. But first, the island's residents must vote to greenlight the project or turn the seasteaders away. Powers speaks with fellow novelist Marlon James.

Discussion | Hezbollah, Lebanon, and Israel's Ongoing Conflict with Iran (online)

Over the last several weeks, events have unfolded at a staggering pace in Israel and the wider Middle East. An exploding pager attack killed or maimed thousands of Hezbollah operatives, and an exploding walkie-talkie attack took out hundreds more. Israel carried out more than 2,000 airstrikes targeting Hezbollah's infrastructure in Lebanon and eliminated a large number of senior Hezbollah leaders, including their chief Hassan Nasrallah and a senior Iranian general. Lat week, the IDF began a ground operation in southern Lebanon, and Iran launched a massive barrage of ballistic missiles at Israel. These events are reverberating around the region, and there is likely more to come in the near future. To help you make sense of it all, this is a group of Middle East experts: Chairman Elliott Abrams, a veteran Middle East policymaker who has served in multiple presidential administrations; Hanin Ghaddar, an expert on Lebanese affairs and fellow at The Washington Institute; and Richard Goldberg, a senior advisor at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. Together with Jonathan Silver, they'll discuss the strategic situation facing Israel, the calculations of Iran and its proxies, what steps the Jewish state should take next, and how America ought to approach the unfolding conflict.
