Book Discussion | Asian Americans in an Anti-Black World: A Racial Reckoning (online)

Where do Asian Americans fit into the U.S. racial order? Are they subordinated comparably to Black people or permitted adjacency to whiteness? The racial reckoning prompted by the police murder of George Floyd and the surge in anti-Asian hate during the COVID-19 pandemic raise these questions with new urgency. Claire Jean Kim's book is a groundbreaking study that will shake up scholarly and popular thinking on these matters. Theoretically innovative and based on rigorous historical research, this provocative book tells us we must consider both anti-Blackness and white supremacy―and the articulation of the two forces―in order to understand U.S. racial dynamics. The construction of Asian Americans as not-white but above all not-Black has determined their positionality for nearly two centuries. How Asian Americans choose to respond to this status will help to define racial politics in the U.S. in the twenty-first century.

Lecture | The Nazi Chronobscene: Extreme Chronopolitics in the Third Reich

The final years of the Third Reich witnessed the rise of a radical strain of chronopolitical discourse suggesting that a German defeat would spell the very end of history. History had only come into being under Hitler and it would perish with him. Ultimately, the war was a gigantic fireworks display in which a fatally accelerated "time without precedent" (Goebbels) was using up all its historical energy. This radical strain was there from the beginning of Nazism and survived its downfall. The talk will analyze its peculiar logic by tracing and connecting several manifestations: the notion of terminal performance underlying the widespread abuse of the methamphetamine Pervitin; the idea of compressed morbidity guiding the future plans of Nazi insurance agencies to advocate a policy of senicide; the early literary prefiguration of the monopolization of history by the Third Reich in Katharine Burdekin's 1937 dystopia Swastika Night; Hans Blumenberg's philosophical take on Hitler's final days; and, most importantly, the post-Stalingrad rhetoric of Joseph Goebbels, who in the wake of Hitler's increasing absence becomes the principal purveyor of the Nazi chronobscene. With Geoffrey Winthrop-Young (MA Freiburg, PhD UBC) is Professor of German and Nordic Studies at the University of British Columbia.

Book Discussion | Pucking Sweet by Emily Rath

The lines between work and play get blurred in this red hot, inclusive, MMF “why choose” hockey romance that set TikTok on fire: "My name is Poppy St. James and I’ve just landed my dream job as the Director of Public Relations for the NHL’s hottest new team, the Jacksonville Rays. But if I want to stay beyond my one-year contract, I'll have to prove myself. Easy. PR is in my blood. What’s not so easy are the hockey players. They’re a real handful—especially party boy defenseman Lukas Novikov. I don't care how well Lukas plays hockey. Off the ice, he's a PR nightmare. Brash and bossy, he's always finding ways to drag his teammates into trouble—especially fellow defenseman Colton Morrow—and I have to find brilliant ways to drag them out of it. The players can all call me PR Barbie all they want, but I'm getting the job done. Because I am poised, powerful, and always professional . . . until the fateful night my phone rings. With one little phone call from home that leads to one drunken mistake, my carefully balanced life is knocked off-kilter. And now I'm staring down at a little blue plus sign and I have no strategy, no idea what’s next. All I know is that nothing will ever be the same." Emily Rath will be live  to meet with fans and discuss her latest release, Pucking Sweet.

Discussion | Thought, Movement, and the Brain

Writer Jennifer Homans — author of Apollo's Angels: A History of Ballet and the monumental recent biography of George Balanchine, Mr. B — in conversation with neuroscientist Daniel Wolpert, whose research focuses on experimental approaches to human movement. This conversation will explore the relationship of movement to the brain. How is thought movement and movement thought? How do we understand the nature of the particular movement and training that is dance? Where is such memory stored in the body and how does it affect those who pursue such a path? What function does dance serve in our personal and collective lives? And, finally, where did the idea to devote a decade to writing about the life and work of Balanchine come from and how did it evolve?
