Film | Shadow of a Doubt (1943) Directed by Alfred Hitchcock

Charlotte "Charlie" Newton is bored with her quiet life at home with her parents and younger sister. She wishes something exciting would happen and knows exactly what they need: a visit from her sophisticated, much-traveled Uncle Charlie Oakley, her mother's younger brother. Imagine her delight when, out of the blue, they receive a telegram from Uncle Charlie announcing that he is coming to visit them for awhile. Charlie Oakley creates quite a stir and charms the ladies' club, as well as the bank President where his brother-in-law works. Young Charlie begins to notice odd behavior on his part, such as cutting out a story in the local paper about a man who marries and then murders rich widows. When two strangers appear asking questions about him, she begins to imagine the worst about her beloved Uncle Charlie. Director: Alfred Hitchcock Cast: Teresa Wright, Joseph Cotten, Macdonald Carey, Patricia Collinge, Henry Travers, Wallace Ford, Hume Cronyn Alfred Hitchcock was an English filmmaker who is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of cinema. Book Discussion | The Met: A History of a Museum and Its People

This book is a groundbreaking bottom-up history of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, exploring both its triumphs and its failings. Jonathan Conlin tells the stories of the people who have shaped the museum―from curators and artists to museumgoers and security guards―and the communities that have made it their own. Highlighting inequalities of wealth, race, and gender, he exposes the hidden costs of the museum’s reliance on “robber barons” and oligarchs, the exclusionary immigration policies that influenced the foundation of the American Wing, and the obstacles faced by women curators. Drawing on extensive interviews with past and current staff, Conlin brings the story up to the present, including the museum’s troubled 150th anniversary in 2020. As the Met faces continued controversy, this book offers a timely account of the people behind an iconic institution and a compelling case for the museum’s vision of shared human creativity.

Book Discussion | Doctor Will You Pray for Me? Medicine, Chaplains, and Healing the Whole Person (online)

The modern world faces religious, spiritual and existential quandaries, as new technologies redefine the beginnings and ends of life. Excruciating choices arise about when to turn off the machines—whether and when we should "play God." The COVID-19 pandemic made these dilemmas ever more acute. Increasingly, however, public discourse on religion and spirituality is polarized, with evangelicals on one side and vehement atheists on the other. Dr. Robert Klitzman's new book explores how patients and families struggle to make sense of serious disease and threats of death and other medical crises, seeking hope, purpose and larger connections beyond themselves. Physicians and other clinical staff are frequently uncomfortable with these issues, and chaplains have been filling the void, developing valuable approaches and insights. Most Americans will live out their final years in hospitals or nursing homes, and face existential and spiritual quandaries. Many of their prior religious and spiritual beliefs will fall short, and chaplains will often be the ones to assist, partly by reframing narratives and understandings of illness and spirituality. Yet people often know little, if anything, about these professionals. Klitzman presents stories about the spiritual lives of patients and explores the role of chaplains—who they are, what they do and the challenges they face.

Discussion | Television Utopias of the 1970s

Susan Murray and Fred Turner will be introduced by Rebecca Cleman and Marita Sturken as they present on television utopias of the 1970s and their continued relevance to our current political, cultural, and technological landscape. Susan Murray: TV Utopias and Media Ecologies The state of network television and cable regulation at the start of the 1970s is essential context for our understanding of what was at stake at the 1974 Open Circuits conference. In particular, broadcast television’s failure to live up to its public interest mandate and the sudden availability of public access cable channels and affordable portable video cameras intersected with new theories of the media and a push for participatory democracy in media. In this talk, Murray will connect the 1974 conference, some of the writing in The New Television anthology, and our contemporary situation back to this history and its industrial, artistic, and theoretical framing. Fred Turner: New Television, New Democracy In 1974, one world was fading away and another was being born. For years the dream that cybernetic feedback systems and electronic media would birth global peace had fueled the work of artists like Stan VanDerBeek and Nam June Paik. But now the Bronx was burning and the Vietnam War was lost. This talk will argue that even as cybernetic utopianism faded, it gave rise to a new, pluralist vision of video art and American democracy, a vision centered on questions of difference, identity and the power of seeing and being seen.
