Book Discussion | The Collaborative Constitution: How to Protect Our Democracy

Author Aileen Kavanagh offers a fresh account of how we should protect rights in a democracy. Departing from leading theoretical accounts which present the courts and legislature as rivals for constitutional supremacy, Kavanagh argues that protecting rights is a collaborative enterprise between all three branches of government - the Executive, the legislature, and the courts. On a collaborative vision of constitutionalism, protecting rights is neither the solitary task of a Herculean super-judge, nor the dignified pronouncements of an enlightened legislature. Instead, it is a complex, dynamic, and collaborative endeavour, where each branch has a distinct but complementary role to play, whilst engaging with each other in a spirit of comity and mutual respect. Connecting constitutional theory with the practice of protecting rights in a democracy, this book offers an innovative understanding of the separation of powers, grounded in the values and virtues of constitutional collaboration.

Discussion | The World at Play: Historical Gameboards (online)

Many gameboards on view in the exhibition Playing with Design: Gameboards, Art and Culture offer a glimpse into the social and economic changes of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. As locally-made artifacts and educational tools, they often reflect, if not reinforce, the values and priorities of modern America. Using the Wendel Gameboard Collection as a reference, game scholar and designer Mary Flanagan will discuss her historical research about game rules, design, role-playing and community building. Followed by a conversation with Naomi Clarck, Chair of the NYU Game Center, her presentation will highlight the cultural and political significance of board games such as the Game of the Goose, Monopoly, Chess and Parcheesi while shedding a new light on play, and the game industry.

Book Discussion | The Enlightenment's Most Dangerous Woman: Emilie Du Chatelet and the Making of Modern Philosophy

Just as the Enlightenment was gaining momentum throughout Europe, philosopher Emilie Du Chatelet broke through the many barriers facing women at the time and published a major philosophical treatise in French. Within a few short years, she became famous: she was read and debated from Russia to Prussia, from Switzerland to England, from up north in Sweden to down south in Italy. This was not just remarkable because she was a woman, but because of the substance of her contributions. While the men in her milieu like Voltaire and Kant sought disciples to promote their ideas, Du Chatelet promoted intellectual autonomy. She counselled her readers to read the classics, but never to become a follower of another's ideas. Her proclamation that a true philosopher must remain an independent thinker, rather than a disciple of some supposedly "great man" like Isaac Newton or Ren? Descartes, posed a threat to an emerging consensus in the Enlightenment. And that made her dangerous. With author Andrew Janiak, Professor of Philosophy and co-leader of Project Vox at Duke University.

Discussion | The Schoenberg-Puccini Connection

A dialogue featuring music historian Harvey Sachs (Schoenberg: Why He Matters) and the musicologist Linda Fairtile (Giacomo Puccini: A Guide to Research). On April 1, 1924, Palazzo Pitti in Florence hosted a "Festival of the International Society for Contemporary Music" with the goal of presenting new musical trends to Italian audiences. The highlight of the performance was the Florentine premiere of Arnold Schoenberg's Pierrot Lunaire, an atonal melodrama for soprano and chamber ensemble composed in 1912 that was already becoming the Austrian composer's most celebrated and performed work. The composer himself led the performance from the podium. To his delight, attending in the audience - score in hand - was Italy's preeminent opera composer, Giacomo Puccini, whom Schoenberg considered one of the innovators of twentieth-century harmonic language. One hundred years later, as we celebrate the 150th anniversary of Schoenberg's birth, and the centennial of Puccini's death, this is an evening dedicated to the impact of these two composers, not only on each other, but on the world around them, and on the many composers who have continued to carry the torch of their musical innovation.

Book Discussion | Giant Robot: Thirty Years of Defining Asian-American Pop Culture by Eric Nakamura

Celebrate the release of Giant Robot: Thirty Years of Defining Asian-American Pop Culture with a lively discussion between Giant Robot's co-founder Eric Nakamura and journalist Claudine Ko, writer Ed Lin, and artist, illustrator and author Travis Louie. Los Angeles, 1994. Two Asian-American punk rockers staple together the zine of their dreams featuring Sumo, Hong Kong Cinema and Osamu Tezuka. From the very margins of the DIY press and alternative culture, Giant Robot burst into the mainstream with over 60,000 copies in circulation annually at its peak. Giant Robot even popped right off the page, setting up a restaurant, gallery, and storefronts in LA, as well as galleries and stores in New York and San Francisco. As their influence grew in the 90s and 00s, Giant Robot was eventually invited to the White House by Barack Obama, to speak at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design, and to curate the GR Biennale at the Japanese American National Museum. Home to a host of unapologetically authentic perspectives bridging the bicultural gap between Asian and Asian-American pop culture, Giant Robot had the audacity to print such topics side-by-side, and become a touchstone for generations of artists, musicians, creators, and collectors of all kinds in a pre-social media era. Nowhere else were pieces on civil rights activists running next to articles on skateboarding and Sriracha. Toy collectors, cartoonists, and street style pioneers got as many column inches as Michelle Yeoh, Karen O, James Jean, and Haruki Murakami. Giant Robot: Thirty Years of Defining Asian-American Pop Culture features the best of the magazine's sixty-eight issue run alongside never-before-seen photographs, supplementary writing by long-term contributing journalist Claudine Ko, and tributes from now-famous fans who've been around since day one. Margaret Cho, Daniel Wu, and Randall Park celebrate Giant Robot's enduring legacy alongside pioneering pro-skateboarder Peggy Oki, contemporary art giant Takashi Murakami, culinary darling Natasha Pickowicz, and critically acclaimed essayist Jia Tolentino.
