Opening Reception | Slice of Life: Paintings - Floating Visions

Slice of Life highlights a collection of Kim MacConnel's "bedsheet" paintings as well as a set of smaller gouaches on paper. The presentation, created between 1979 and 1981, offers fresh insight into an important figure of the Pattern and Decoration movement. The cotton-sheeting base of the bedsheet pieces, painted with diluted acrylics and pinned to the walls as if they are positioned temporarily, bestows the works with a sense that they are floating visions that could vanish at any time. The artist sees this impermanence as a reflection of our current moment, mainly the urgent issue of climate change and its predicted effects over the coming decades. MacConnel is one of the founding artists of the Pattern and Decoration movement of the 1970s. MacConnel's word has been presented at the Whitney Biennials of 1975, 1977, 1979,1981, 1985; the Museum of Ghent, Belgium; MoMA PS1, New York; Contemporary Art Museum Houston; Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Discussion | Journalism and Democracy in an AI World

In an era where democracy hinges on access to accurate information, the global media landscape faces growing threats and shrinking resources. Behind the decline are tech behemoths that divert advertising dollars from news outlets to their platforms, platforms which have long profited from hosting news stories, headlines, and summaries. This business model rewards sensationalism at a time when we are just beginning to see the effects of generative AI on an informed electorate on which democracy relies. This special panel of international experts will discuss global efforts to support quality journalism, the need to protect free expression and diverse cultures, and the critical role of platform payments in sustaining reliable information.

Discussion | The Style and Politics of Choreographer Talley Beatty’s Dance

An iconic figure in 20th-century dance, Talley Beatty developed a dance style, grounded in the blues aesthetic, that integrated ballet, vernacular, modern, jazz, and African diasporic movement. Through his monumental dance art as a choreographer Talley Beatty helped shape American life. His sense of humor resonated in his choreography, in which his approaches to using movement vocabulary of these different forms was often surprising and amusing. His work also focused on his own life of alienation, racial discrimination, and hardships, so that his exploration of these struggles shaped the Black tradition in American art.  This evening event brings together dance historians, dance students and professionals, and artistic directors, who worked with Beatty's choreography on Broadway or in his concert dance theater pieces. The center of the program will include excerpts from an interview Marcea Daiter conducted with Talley Beatty on September 10, 1992. Beatty tells colorful stories of his childhood, his dance training in Chicago, performing, choreographing, and recalls anecdotes about his associates including Katherine Dunham, Alvin Ailey, Duke Ellington, Jerome Robbins, and others.  As part of this event, Marcea Daiter and Dyane Harvey-Salaam co-host a panel discussion about Talley Beatty’s life and career. Registration required.

Book Discussion | A Book about Ray by Ellen Levy

A Book about Ray is the first full-career survey of the idiosyncratic life and work of Ray Johnson, a collagist, performance artist, and pioneer of mail art. Ray Johnson (1927-1995), a.k.a. “New York’s most famous unknown artist,” was notorious for the elaborate games he played with the institutions of the art world, soliciting their attention even as he rejected their invitations. In A Book about Ray, Ellen Levy offers a comprehensive study of the artist who turned the business of career-making into a tongue-in-cheek performance, tracing his artistic development from his arrival at Black Mountain College in 1945 to his death in 1995. Levy describes Johnson’s practice as one that was constantly shifting—whether in tone, in its address to potential audiences, or among three primary artistic modes: collage, performance, and correspondence art. A Book about Ray takes an elliptical path, circling around rather than trying to arrest in flight the elusive artist and his purposefully ephemeral art. By crafting the book in this way, Levy evokes Ray Johnson’s art in the moment of its making and draws readers into the artist’s world, while making them feel, from the beginning, that they somehow already know their way around that world. In exploring Johnson’s scene, readers will also encounter the artists who influenced him, like Joseph Cornell and Marcel Duchamp, and his friends and peers like Jasper Johns, Allan Kaprow, Robert Rauschenberg, and Andy Warhol. The work of such figures will look forever different in light of Johnson’s subversive take on their shared aesthetic. At this event, author Ellen Levy will discuss her new book and more with Allison Nellis.
