Lecture | The Semiotics of Othering: The Portrayal and Erasure of Palestinians in Israeli Schoolbooks

Nurit Peled-Elhanan is the author of Holocaust Education and the Semiotics of Othering in Israeli Schoolbooks (2023), and the Co-initiator of The Russell Tribunal on Palestine 2009-2014. Israeli school textbooks are vehicles for the rationalization of inequality as crucial to the construction of Israeli citizenship. Nurit Peled-Elhanan discusses the visual culture and linguistic rhetoric of Israeli schoolbooks which legitimates the state's historical and cultural marginalization and/or erasure of Palestinians in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza as well as stereotyping Jewish “minoritized” populations. Her research demonstrates the semiotic strategies by which inequity is embedded in media — such as cartoon caricature, photography, graphs, cartography and discriminatory lexicons and rhetoric. This curriculum, in part, targets secondary school students as future mandatory conscripts into the Israeli Defense Force where they serve in the occupation of the West Bank and the war on Gaza. The function of the curriculum is to effectuate a momentary congealing and punctuation that brings the semiosis of learning to a standstill foreclosing any alternative depiction of internal and external others.

Leanne Shapton's cult art book inspired by a government textbook is back in print with a gorgeous new cover. It is a new edition of the artist's bold reinterpretation of a century-old book. While shopping in the used-book store the Monkey's Paw in Toronto, Leanne Shapton happened upon a 1956 edition of the stalwart reference book The Native Trees of Canada, originally published in 1917 by the Canadian Department of Northern Affairs and National Resources. Most people might simply view the book as a dry cataloging of a banal subject; Shapton, however, saw beauty in the technical details and was inspired to create her own interpretation of The Native Trees of Canada.
