Lecture | Nikolai Nadezhdin’s Return to Grace: Political Rehabilitation in the Era of Nicholas I (online)

The regime of Nicholas I (1825-1855) was not known for its kind nature. Russians accused of political transgressions faced long periods of imprisonment and even death. Nicholas Nadezhdin (1802-1856) is an exception to this rule. Condemned to exile, he had little prospect of restoring his standing as a professor and publisher. Yet, his exile proved to be brief, and by the time of his death he had risen to the high rank of Active State Councilor and become a trusted official in the Interior Ministry. How can Nadezhdin’s return to favor be explained? What did he have to do to convince the regime of his reliability, and what was the price for his rehabilitation? Lecture | Writing When Young: Adolescent Published Authors of Children's Books

Children’s literature studies have recently witnessed a new interest in young people’s own contribution to literature, behind the scenes, as authors of fan fiction or as published authors. Certain prejudices exist around such young authors: their work is often seen as derivative and imitative and associated with spontaneous creativity rather than work. In this talk, Vanessa Joosen discusses three case studies from Dutch children’s literature to add nuance to the ideas about adolescent published authors. Based on interviews and archival material, she draws attention to their professionalism and the importance of intra- and intergenerational collaboration.   Vanessa Joosen is professor of English literature and children’s literature at the University of Antwerp (Belgium) and author of Adulthood in Children’s Literature.

Book Discussion | Someone Like Us by Dinaw Mengestu (In Person AND Online!)

Join WNYC's Alison Stewart and Dinaw Mengestu for a live conversation about his newest book, Someone Like Us. In Dinaw Mengestu's Someone Like Us, the son of Ethiopian immigrants seeks to understand a hidden family history and uncovers a past colored by unexpected loss, addiction, and the enduring emotional pull toward home. After abandoning his once-promising career as a journalist in search of a new life in Paris, Mamush meets Hannah—a photographer whose way of seeing the world shows him the possibility of finding not only love but family. Now, five years later, with his marriage to Hannah on the verge of collapse, he returns to the close-knit immigrant Ethiopian community of Washington, DC that defined his childhood. At its center is Mamush’s stoic, implacable mother, and Samuel, the larger-than-life father figure whose ceaseless charm and humor have always served as a cover for a harder, more troubling truth. But on the same day that Mamush arrives home in Washington, Samuel is found dead in his garage. With Hannah and their two-year-old son back in Paris, Mamush sets out on an unexpected journey across America in search of answers to questions he'd been told never to ask. As he does so, he begins to understand that perhaps the only chance he has of saving his family and making it back home is to confront not only the unresolved mystery around Samuel’s life and death, but his own troubled memories, and the years spent masking them.

Discussion | Attrition Sculptor Explains the Symbolism Behind His Artwork on Display at a City Park

Sculptor Cannupa Hanska Luger will talk about his creation - Attrition, currently on view at City Hall Park in Lower Manhattan. The sculpture is a 10-foot-long, large-scale skeletal sculpture made from steel with an ash-black patina. The form emerges from the ground beneath, visible through greenery indigenous to this region. The piece showcases the profound interdependence between animals, humans, and the land. It brings attention to the loss, trauma, and violence that may occur due to a single disturbance in an ecosystem. Situated on the pathway to City Hall, Attrition symbolically engages with NYC's heart of policy-making, bringing to light the history of the bison's survival. Luger will be joined in conversation by Paul Farber, Director of Monument Lab.

Discussion | Nazism and the Decline of the Weimar Republic

A major national election looms and the leader who years earlier had encouraged an insurrection is campaigning to a devoted audience. Politically tinged trials unfold in the courts, and political violence appears to be spreading amidst armed protests and assassination attempts. The above could describe Weimar Germany in the 1920s, but also characterizes the United States of America in 2024. This series seeks insights from the history of the Weimar Republic that might illuminate our current social and political climate--a fraught era for the American republic just as Weimar was for Germany. Political scientist Sheri Berman and sociologist John Torpey in conversation.

Lecture | Two Revolutionary Jews: Leon Trotsky and Chaim Zhitlowsky (in-person and online)

What role should Jews play in revolutionary movements? Should they act collectively on their own behalf or as indistinct individuals within majority populations in the interest of universalistic ideals? Or was this a false dichotomy? These questions have defined the basis of left-wing Jewish politics since the 19th century. In this lecture, Tony Michels explores two different approaches to revolutionary Jewish politics, as defined by Leon Trotsky and Chaim Zhitlowsky. Both were Russian-born Jews who played seminal roles in the Russian revolutionary movement. Both also came to be seen as embodiments of the modern Jewish experience. However, they gave radically different answers to the predicament of modern Jewry.
