Author Reading | Book Launch: Thomas de Waal's The Caucasus: An Introduction

Noted journalist de Waal--author of the highly acclaimed Black Garden--makes the case that while the Caucasus is often treated as a sub-plot in the history of Russia or as a mere gateway to Asia, the five-day war in Georgia, which flared into a major international crisis in 2008, proves that this is still a combustible region, whose inner dynamics and history deserve a much more complex appreciation from the wider world. Discussant: Lincoln Mitchell, Harriman Institute.

Lecture | Franklin Roosevelt, Fiorello La Guardia, and the New Deal in New York City

Mason Williams will present a treatment of the close and at times tumultuous relationship between two of the most successful popular politicians of the 20th century, President Franklin Roosevelt and New York City Mayor Fiorello La Guardia. The talk will explore how Roosevelt’s New Deal, to which La Guardia contributed both political support and policy ideas, shaped New York City’s politics in the thirties and forties and helped to create the mode of politics characteristic of New York in the decades following World War II. It will look at Roosevelt and La Guardia’s unlikely personal relationship, consider what the New Deal programs did (and did not do) in New York, and ask why Roosevelt and La Guardia were able to forge extraordinary connections with the public.

Opening Reception | 2 Exhibitions: Jeff Chien-Hsing Liao's BOMB / Carter Potter's Backpainting

BOMB features works from Liao's Habitat 7, Depth of Fields, and Intersections: Grand Concourse series, as well as new work from Coney Island. With his large-scale, panoramic format, Liao casts the city of New York as a dynamic character in each piece, highlighting the diverse cultures and urban landscapes in the city's distinct neighborhoods. The Los Angeles-based Potter references his hometown in his choice of the film strip medium. However, Backpainting marks a stylistic reversal as he moves away from painting oils on top of film stills in his earliest work to painting on the backs of each still.

Staged Reading | 2 One-Woman Shows: Rosa Speaks / My Willa: The Life and Loves of Willa Cather

Two Broadway actresses bring to the stage the lives of two very special women: Rosa Parks, an icon of the Civil Rights movement, and Willa Cather, one of the first women to receive the Pulitzer Prize for literature. In Rosa Speaks, the audience learns the historical background that prompted Parks to refuse to give up her seat on a bus to a white person. My Willa: The Life and Loves of Willa Cather is the story of the author, who in 1888 astounded her Nebraska neighbors with her brilliant mind and unconventional manners. In spite of her literary success, her personal life was fraught with conflict. Her work became her refuge and helped her to transcend the problems that beset her.

Opening Reception | Group Show: Chemical Reactions

The thirteen artists in this exhibition experiment with their own chemical analysis. The basic elements of who we physically are can be said to be chemical, but certainly it goes beyond our biological selves and into our selves. An artist applies a solution to paper and watches as the paper is transformed by it, not merely on the surface but deep within it, to change at its core its essence – forever. Or, at least, until the next exposure to the elements. A chemical reaction can turn us into gentle doves – or vicious killers; sometimes temporarily, sometimes permanently.

Opening Reception | Paintings: Carter Hodgkin's Unforeseen Behaviors

Fusing physics, digital technology, and painting, Hodgkin's hyper-energetic, cascading compositions are based on simulated atomic particle collisions. Amid an infinite black void, thousands of vibrantly-hued dots explode and implode in a constant state of flux, conjuring fireworks, waterfalls, and volcanic mountains. An exploration of instability and uncertainty, Unforeseen Behaviors alludes not only to the behavior of atomic particles, but to emotional states of tumult, tension, and unease. Hodgkin has mounted solo shows at venues including Cheryl Pelavin Fine Art, Berland/Hall Gallery, Nature Morte Gallery, and White Columns, all in New York City; as well as Nature Morte in New Delhi, India; and the ZKM/Center for Art & Media, Karlsruhe, Germany.

Opening Reception | Photographs: Marilyn Bridges' India: A Pilgrimage

35 black-and-white silver gelatin prints by the accomplished photographer. The photographs date from 1993 and 1996, when Bridges journeyed along the banks of the sacred Indian rivers, the Ganges and the Gandak. Here she observed the unfolding of ceremonies that date back to antiquity. In these solemn but prosaic rituals there is an ease -- even a symmetry -- between people and animals, including towering elephants. Bridges’ images exude a quiet dignity, effortlessly capturing both the simplicity and integrity of the Indian people. Most of the photographs were taken in the early morning light, and they have an ethereal quality, which is rich yet calming.

Opening Reception | Photography: Adam Fuss' Home and the World

Fuss was born in London in 1961, and has lived and worked in New York City since 1982. He is best known for life-size, evocative photograms of babies, embroidered Victorian baptismal dresses, eviscerated rabbits, swimming snakes. His imagery, often originating in the natural world, is hued by the spiritual and poetic; his process, which distills the essence of the photographic moment – a flash of light on a sensitized surface – emphasizes themes of transformation and perception. Fuss seeks not to describe an object with the detailed clarity of traditional photography, but rather in ghostly manifestations of light and shadow. He cradles intimate, complex subjects – death, memory, sexuality, childhood, loss – in images of notable size and simplicity.

Lecture | The Zookeeper's Couch

Looking at other animals is, for most humans, a fun thing to do. That is, unless it's depressing. Contemporary zoos go to surprising lengths in order to satiate our desires to see animals that look happy—from spraying Calvin Klein cologne in tiger enclosures (to inspire them to be more active) to giving female gorillas human contraceptives so that they can have the joy of sex without the complication of too many babies. But how do we know if a zoo animal is happy or not? And once we've figured it out, what on earth do we do about it? In this talk, Laurel Braitman explores human understandings of animal happiness and discontent in the context of zoos and aquariums and just what these ideas say about us. Braitman, historian and anthropologist of science at MIT, studies the phenomena of mental illness in nonhuman animals. Braitman has worked as a biologist and environmental conservation professional and her interests include not only the shifting relationships between humans and other creatures, but also how understandings of evolutionary relationships and species distinctions change our ideas of ourselves.
