Discussion | A Static State: The Budget Crisis and Albany in Transition

There will be a new governor next year, but is Albany likely to change? New York State’s turbulent politics and bleak fiscal situation have made this year’s budget among the more difficult in recent history. Lieutenant Governor Ravitch attempted to mobilize long-term fiscal accountability, but the Paterson administration chose a different path to attempt fiscal control. What can be learned from the crisis, and what will happen to state and local government — and the politics that drive our fiscal decisions — if the economy doesn’t recover soon? Keynote by: Richard Ravitch, Lieutenant Governor, New York. Ravitch will then join a discussion with: Gerald Benjamin, Distinguished Professor of Political Science and Associate Vice President of Regional Engagement, SUNY New Paltz Blair Horner, Legislative Director, New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG); Liz Krueger, State Senator, New York; and Carol O'Cleireacain, Senior Fellow, The Rockefeller Institute of Government. Symposium | Escape to Life: German Intellectuals in New York

Planned to take place 65 years after the end of World War II, this symposium is intended to present a series of portraits to a wider audience. In New York, the US gave shelter to a large number of leading intellectuals from the German-speaking world, saving their lives in most of the cases. These public figures either stayed in New York where most of them arrived or moved on to California or other places like Princeton. Some of them - Brecht, Mann, and Horkheimer, for example - returned to Europe soon after 1945. The lectures of this symposium are meant to explore the impact the US, and New York, had on these authors/artists, and on their work. The speakers are also invited to analyze the influence these intellectuals had on American culture and the transformations which happened to their thoughts when translating them into another language, culture, and intellectual arena and addressing them to the American audience. Finally the symposium will discuss how those who returned passed on the American experience to Europe. The speakers may feel completely free to choose the specific angle (biography, theory, politics) or aspect (a single work, a personal constellation) they regard as elucidating. The conference is accompanied by an exhibition of portraits by Fred Stein.

Screening | Polish Television: Krzysztof Kieslowski's The Decalogue (1989)

The Decalogue is ten short films inspired by the Ten Commandments. Each story corresponds to a commandment and centers on different residents of the same modern Warsaw apartment complex. Director Stanley Kubrick described this as the only masterpiece he could name in his lifetime. Showing: Episode 9 "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife" Roman, after discovering his impotence, urges his wife Hanka to take a lover. She reluctantly complies, and Roman, despite his earlier words, becomes obsessively jealous. Spying on her, he learns of her affair, and vows to kill himself - not knowing that Hanka was in fact breaking off the relationship. Episode 10 "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's goods" - especially not when it leads to the conclusion of this black comedy about two brothers who inherit their father's valuable stamp collection and end up paying rather more than they bargained for. In Polish with English subtitles.

Lecture | Catastrophe and Multitudes: Reflections on the Immanence of Power

A lecture by Adi Ophir. In our contemporary world, catastrophes, or large scale disasters, both "natural" and "man-made," have become a major domain for governmental reason and practices. At the same time, the administration of disaster has become a major apparatus for governing multitudes. The problematization of catastrophe in political theory would thus mean questioning the ways power anticipates catastrophes, works to contain them, and is organized, perhaps even constituted vis-a-vis their imminent possibility, but also the ways power produces its own catastrophes and puts them to work at its service. Do catastrophes play the same role as that played in different theoretical contexts by that anarchic and unpredictable element associated with individual freedom or with the multitude? Should this unpredictable, ungovernable element, which the notion of catastrophe implies, delimit our understanding of power in the same way that the unpredictability and un-decidability of human action does?

Forum | An Historic Hull on Hallowed Ground: Three Experts Discuss the 200-Year-Old Ship Next Door

New Yorkers were fascinated this summer when archaeologists monitoring during construction on the south side of the World Trade Center's redevelopment site discovered the 32-foot remnant of an 18th century wooden ship's hull. Since then, archaeologists, maritime historians, and conservationists removed the remains and have been working to document and analyze this fascinating relic of New York history. This evening, join Tribute WTC Visitor Center and Science & the City for a public event featuring presentations by three of the experts involved in this exciting excavation project in Lower Manhattan. Archaeologist Michael Pappalardo, whose firm AKRF is leading the excavation, will describe the archaeological details of the WTC renovation site and the ship discovered there in July. Norman Brouwer, formerly the chief maritime historian at the South Street Seaport Museum, will present images of the ship and tales of other ships discovered underground in New York. And conservator Nichole Doub will explain how she and her lab are stabilizing this ship's remains and explain options for preserving 200+ year old wooden remains. Brian Ferguson, a professor of anthropology at Rutgers University-Newark, will moderate the event. Following the lecture, please join a wine and cheese reception.

Concert | The Other Mendelssohn: Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel

The first of a 3-concert series featuring the major works of Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, a composer of the 19th-century who was often overshadowed by her brother, Felix Mendelssohn. Recognized in The New York Times as “the dean of Mendelssohn scholars in the United States,” R. Larry Todd curates the series. Hensel wrote more than 450 works, most of which were not discovered until late in the 20th-century. This will be the first time in NYC all of her major works will be performed. The series opens with a selection of Goethe lieder, Vier Lieder für das Pianoforte, Op. 8, piano duets, A Cappella trios, and the Piano Trio in D Minor, Op. 11 (1846), Hensel’s last major work. A pre-concert talk by Todd on Hensel’s life and work will take place at 7 PM.

Screening | Walter Astrada's Documentary Undesired: The Plight of Being Female in India

India is a diverse country, separated by class and ethnicity. But all women confront the cultural pressure to bear a son. No woman is exempt. Society’s desire for boys originates from the belief that men make money while women, because of their expensive dowry costs, are a financial burden. As a result, there is a disregard for the lives of women and girls. From birth until old age, they face a constant threat of violence and, too frequently, death. Since 1980, an estimated 40 million women have been “missing,” by way of abortion, neglect, or murder. The government has banned the dowry and sex selective abortions, but both practices still thrive. This film tells the stories of these women and girls.
