To mark the 10th anniversary of the tragic events of Sept. 11, The Associated Press and the Museum have collaborated on an exhibition of 30 compelling photographs drawn from the AP archives. 9/11: A Uniform Response pays tribute to the New York City Police Department and all first responders, honoring their role on and after Sept. 11. Poignant images taken by award-winning AP photographers depict the morning of the attacks, the courageous response in the days and weeks afterward, the long road to recovery, and the building of 1 World Trade Center, formerly known as the Freedom Tower, the rising symbol of rebirth at Ground Zero. In addition, the show features a brief documentary film offering interviews with AP photographers represented in the exhibit.

Lecture | Recalibrations: Marketization and the Social Relevance of Art in Post-Soviet Kazakhstan

A talk by Zhanara Nauruzbayeva, Postdoctoral Fellow, Columbia University. Introduction by Professor Alan Timberlake. Scholarship on artistic production has connected discourses of creative autonomy to market forces. In Kazakhstan, however, the postsocialist liberalization of artistic production from the support and oversight provided by the Soviet state has produced the opposite: a discourse of the social relevance of art. During ethnographic field research in Almaty, Kazakhstan, I observed that many artists continued to emphasize the social significance of their work as documenting, reflecting, and transforming contemporary life, as well as representing Kazakhstan abroad. This emphasis on artists’ service to society evoked the Soviet-era discourse on art that vehemently criticized artists preoccupied with their creative autonomy, condemning them as bourgeois. In this presentation, I suggest that this seeming vestige of the Soviet past demonstrates a recalibration of Soviet-era prestige for the purpose of generating private sponsorship. What emerges is a particular aesthetic, ethical, and economic regime where capitalist and socialist values intersect in complex and unexpected ways.

Author Reading | Photographer Bruce Davidson talks about his book Subway

First published in 1986, Davidson's classic series has since garnered critical acclaim for its phenomenal use of extremes of color and shadow set against flash-lit skin. In this third publication, a sequence of 118 images, including 25 never-before-published photographs, moves the viewer through a landscape sometimes menacing, at other times lyrical, soulful and satiric. The images include the full panoply of New Yorkers - from weary straphangers and languourous ladies in summer dresses, to stalking predators and the homeless. Davidson's accompanying text tells the story behind the images, clarifying his method and dramatizing his experience. The artist will discuss his work and give a slideshow presentation at this special event at the Strand.
