Opening Reception | 2 Art Shows: Carla Hernandez / Naoko Ito

Hernandez' work can be read as an abstraction of love and loss. Her practice is a meditation on these seemingly natural dichotomies that ceaselessly search for reconciliation. Her work manifests the romantic and follows it beyond recognition until it has transgressed a singular identity. Using drawing and painting (occasionally with her hands) Hernandez' undulating linework comes from a very specific source, the heart. Ito's interest in artmaking lie in those slippery places where one finds difficulty in distinguishing the manufactured from the organic. Her installation specifically examines the case of Dolly, the first cloned sheep. Through the use of exposed sculptural forms, images, audio and reflective surfaces, Ito's work deals with intersecting themes of nature, science, biotechnology and the moral responsibility that arises. Her pairing of these components creates a sense of natural artifice and easy duplicity.

Opening Reception | Paintings: Marc Séguin's My Century (An Illustrated Guide for Aliens)

This is the gallery's second solo exhibition by Marc Séguin. The title, like his latest body of work, is rich with cynicism, melancholia, and sarcastic humor. Using charcoal and oil on raw canvas, Séguin achieves near photographic grisaille images that read as "postcards of now". Unabashedly tackling hot-button issues such as economic disparity, human rights, and environmental exploitation, Séguin's large-scale paintings are deceptively beautiful reflections of the era in which they were produced.

Opening Reception | Sculpture and Works on Paper by Eric Fertman

Size matters. A single soaring monolith dominates the room, a massive concrete and stainless steel structure rises 12 feet from the gallery floor. Abstract with a hint of human. The same shapes can be found repeated in modest blocks of hand carved wood, several not more than a few inches tall, which litter its base. Where we are awed or cowed by the giant we are charmed by its modest companions. The exhibition is an object lesson in why size matters. It would seem Eric Fertman knows just what to do with it.

Opening Reception | Solo Exhibitions: Rivka Katvan / Alejandra Regalado / Sophie Liedot / Eugene Goldin / John Custodio

Rivka Katvan has established a strong reputation for her candid portrayals of Broadway and Hollywood stars...Elizabeth Taylor, Kevin Kline, Gregory Hines, Glenn Close, Angela Lansbury and Alan Cummings...to name just a few. Alejandra Regalado's In Reference to...Mexican Women of New York is a photographic project that explores issues of cultural identity, femininity and the importance of the personal objects brought by Mexican women who immigrated to the United States. Memory Against Oblivion by Sophie Liedot: "I have long asked myself what the inscription of those names on French monuments really meant -- until the day when I saw my mother's surname. I remained a long time in front of this name which was so familiar to me. I decided to photograph the names of these strangers on these monuments and to express all my feelings and emotions in the way I know best...photographs. These men, women and children all deserve our compassion and respect." Through Holland and Flanders: A Traveler's Diary by Eugene Goldin: "The region that was the purpose of my travel is located in the western part of Europe, mostly populated by people speaking Dutch or the Belgian form of Flemish, but separated by the border of two countries: Netherlands and Belgium. It's so close and so different... everything that I saw during my journey was transformed by my vision and found reflections in my pictorial diary...." Hawaii Portfolio by John Custodio: "This exhibition features landscape photographs I made on two recent trips to several of the Hawaiian Islands. The emphasis is more on the mystical instead of the typical sunset with palm trees on the beach."

Opening Reception | Video: Simon Starling's Triangulation Station A (40°44’49.17″ N 74°0’22.45″ W)

An exhibition by the British artist Simon Starling that draws on two distinct historical narratives. The exhibition, which is Starling’s fifth with the gallery, is based on the idea of the parallax view and runs concurrently with Triangulation Station B (52°31'39.61" N 13°23'38.64" E), a presentation of the same works at Neugerriemschneider, Berlin. Central to both exhibitions are two films presented separately, each in relation to a sculpture that reinforces the sense of mirroring and triangulation at the heart of their structure. Both films are set within the confines of a small working space in which a craftsman is hard at work, and investigate the relationship between the meaning of making and the making of meaning.

Lecture | Saving the Lion' Cage: NYPL's Multi-Story Stacks

The New York Public Library’s plan to remove millions of books from its century-old building at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street has elicited a roar from many writers and scholars. But there has been little comment about the historic value of the remarkable book stacks that will be destroyed once the shelves are emptied. This construction of steel and iron, like a skyscraper frame threaded with curtain-walls of books, is the innovation at the core of the Library’s ingenious organizational scheme. The characters involved in its invention and construction include a celebrated surgeon, an unsung engineer, a Southern foundryman, and several of the most important architects of the era. Architect and author Charles Warren will discuss the history and construction of the stacks and their integral role in one of New York’s most celebrated civic buildings.

Discussion | Conversaciones: Apps, Activism and the Latino Community

Online and mobile apps targeting Latinos fall into the same categories as those targeting the general population: entertainment, news, productivity and communication, with mobile games such as Angry Birds being the most popular. However, issues specific to the Latino community have led to a new breed of apps that inform users of critical civic issues. Moderated by Jazmin Chavez, Communications and Social Media Coordinator at LatinoJustice PRLDEF, a panel of experts explores a selection of apps that are responsive to contemporary social and political challenges confronting Latinos in America. The discussion will examine the functions of these apps, their design intentions, development process and public reception from the perspectives of app designers, developers and commissioning agents.

Author Reading | Deepa Kumar reads from her book Islamophobia and the Politics of Empire

In response to the events of 9/11, the Bush administration launched a “war on terror” ushering in an era of anti-Muslim racism, but 9/11 did not create that phenomenon. Deepa Kumar is Associate Professor of Media Studies and Middle East Studies at Rutgers University. She is the author of Outside the Box: Corporate Media, Globalization and the UPS Strike. She has offered her analysis on Islamophobia to numerous outlets around the world including the BBC, USA Today, Philadelphia Inquirer, Mexico's Proseco, China International radio, and Gulf News from Dubai. Special guest speaker Moustafa Bayoumi is author of How Does It Feel To Be a Problem?: Being Young and Arab in America, which won an American Book Award and the Arab American Book Award for Non-Fiction.
