Discussion | The Ethics of LGBTQI Travel: Challenges and Responsibilities in the Era of Acceptance

Within the past several decades lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex persons in Western societies have seen significant improvements in acceptance and equality. However, many countries in the Global South remain markedly conservative, with laws and social mores that condemn sexual minorities. Homosexuality is still criminalized in over 70 countries, but many LGBTQI tourists from the West still opt to visit these places and face a variety of risks including harassment, imprisonment or bodily harm. Their actions may also impact the wellbeing of indigenous sexual minorities who must be discreet about their sexuality in order to survive everyday life. This event will explore the responsibilities of ethical LGBTQI travel in the 21st century, bearing in mind the interconnectedness of the global community, the impact that tourism can have on indigenous culture, and whether LGBTQI tourists have a role in building broader international acceptance for sexual minorities. Speakers include: Charlie Rounds, Board Chair, International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association Foundation; Olubode Shawn Brown, Managing Partner, BLOOM Events; Michael Luongo, Editor of Gay Travels in the Muslim World, Adjunct Professor, New York University.
