Discussion | The Sufferings of Young Werther: Stanley Corngold's New Translation of Goethe's Classic

Goethe's novel The Sufferings of Young Werther (1774) was perhaps the first European best-seller. The effect it had on Goethe's contemporaries was immense. Even if the "Werther-fever" has since then subsided, Werther still remains relevant due to films and other dramatic adaptations. Stanley Corngold, Professor Emeritus of German and Comparative Literature at Princeton University, and translator of many works, including Kafka's stories, has now published a new English translation of Werther. J. M. Coetzee described the translation in the New York Review of Books as being "of the very highest quality, punctiliously faithful to Goethe's German and sensitive of gradations of style in this extraordinary, trail-blazing first novel."
