Other | Visit the Famous Statue Up Close and 70 Feet in the Air

This major new artwork has been created by the Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi. The work places the 13-foot-tall statue of Columbus in the center of an American living room six stories above the city streets, recontextualizing the historical monument and temporarily transforming it into a contemporary artwork. The room will feature many of the trappings of a domestic living room—lamps, a couch, a coffee table, a television, and more—as well as custom wallpaper by the artist. Through large, loft-style windows, visitors will have dramatic views of Central Park and Midtown Manhattan that will be seen from Columbus’s perspective for the first time. Pass holders are asked to climb six flights of stairs to a height of 70 feet above street level and to descend by a second set of stairs. Flat, rubber-soled shoes are strongly recommended. This exhibition is ADA accessible. If a visitor requires the use of a mobility device (e.g. wheelchair, crutches, or a cane) or has a condition that prevents him or her from using the stairs, a hoist is available. Visitors under 13 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Those between the ages of 13 and 18 may visit without an adult, however a parent or guardian must obtain a pass for them. Given the physical demands of visiting the exhibition, it is not recommended for children under the age of 5. Strollers are not permitted.

Lecture | A Global History of the Paternity Test

For centuries, Western legal tradition relied on the assumption “pater semper incertus est” (“the father is always uncertain”). But starting in the early twentieth century, scientists began a quest for a biological marker of paternity that could unambiguously link a child to his or her progenitor. Prior to the advent of DNA testing, scientists from around the world experimented with fingerprints, dental evidence, ear shape, and blood typing. Nara Milanich, associate professor of history, examines the link between the history of the paternity test and the history of gender, family, and changing ideas about kinship. Although today paternity can be determined with over 99 percent accuracy, biological certainty by no means displaces legal and social constructions of family. In the age of modern biomedicine, the definition of parentage is arguably as “uncertain” as ever.

Lecture | Serhiy Bilenky discusses his book Romantic Nationalism in Eastern Europe: Russian, Polish, and Ukrainian Political Imaginations

This book explores the political imagination of Eastern Europe in the 1830s and 1840s, when Polish, Russian, and Ukrainian intellectuals came to identify themselves as belonging to communities known as nations or nationalities. Bilenky approaches this topic from a transnational perspective, revealing the ways in which modern Russian, Polish, and Ukrainian nationalities were formed and refashioned through the challenges they presented to one another, both as neighboring communities and as minorities within a given community.

Performance | David Levine's Habit, a Durational Performance Installation

Habit is a durational performance installation created by provocateur David Levine, with a commissioned script by playwright Jason Grote (NBC’s Smash) and environment by Marsha Ginsberg. Within a four-walled, fully furnished and functional American ranch house (stocked refrigerator, working stove, plumbing, running water), three actors perform a 90-minute drama on a continuous loop for eight hours a day. Although the language never changes, they improvise the staging to suit their needs—when they’re hungry, they cook; when they’re dirty, they wash. Spectators will circulate around the outside of the house, observing the action through the open windows and doors. A play contained within a sculpture, Habit fuses conventional theater, reality TV, and visual arts performance, short-circuiting our assumptions about spectatorship, performance, routine, and realism.

Lecture | One Minister, Two Sleazebags and the Ku Klux Klan in North Dakota in the 1920s

In 1915, a feckless and perverse romantic with a yen for the bottle on a hilltop outside of Atlanta, Georgia resuscitated the original and notorious Ku Klux Klan. With a small cohort of anti-Semites, Colonel Simmons tried to recruit new members throughout the South, but with few resources, he had only limited success and in 1920 the KKK was close to collapse. Then he met two public relations people in Atlanta. In short order they built an infrastructure and shaped a marketing strategy that would not only grow the KKK into a national movement with some 4-5 million members nationwide, but also make them personal fortunes. Gretchen Dykstra, former Commissioner of Consumer Affairs and Head of the Times Square BID and the 9/11 Memorial Foundation, is currently a writer in residence in the Library’s Wertheim Study and working on a book about North Dakota between 1915-1925.

Screening | Documentary: Julian Schlossberg's Witnesses to the 20th Century

Julian Schlossberg, veteran film and Broadway theater producer had an idea. He would videotape all the influential figures who had shaped the Twentieth Century and weave these accounts into a decade by decade chronology as told by the history makers themselves. To a person, they were candid and brought unexpected insight into the events that shaped the world that we live in today. The award winning writer, Elaine May (Birdcage, Primary Colors) has written the commentary. Among the completed interviews are: Sec. Madeline Albright, Buzz Aldrin, Robert Altman, Sec. General Kofi Annan, Lauren Bacall, Joan Baez, F. Lee Bailey, Sec. James Baker, Ben Bradlee, Tom Brokaw, Helen Gurley Brown, Pat Buchanan, Art Buchwald, William F. Buckley, Jr., Pres. George H.W Bush.... and that is just the start of the alphabet. Followed by a talkback with the filmmaker.

The opening reception reflects the nature of the unusually interactive and interdisciplinary laboratory taking place. Through readings of Sigmund Freud, Julia Kristeva and Roberto Esposito, he explores the problem of violence and its relation to sound and propose a different way of thinking about vibrational ontology and what it would mean to think of vibration as a political problem.

Author Reading | Betty LaVette reads from her book A Woman Like Me

As a teenager in Detroit, Bettye LaVette had a hit single with “My Man—He’s a Lovin’ Man.” By the time she was twenty, she had faded back into obscurity and was barely surviving in New York City. For the next forty years, despite being associated with legends such as Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, and James Brown, she remained relatively unknown outside a circle of devoted fans. Every time it seemed that her dream of stepping into the spotlight was finally coming true, bad luck smashed her hopes, again and again.

Opening Reception | Miljan Suknovic's Tapes, New Works on Paper and Canvas

A solo exhibition of new works by New York based artist Miljan Suknovic. On view will be a range of new works on paper and canvas in which Suknovic continues to translate color and line into luminous and flawlessly calibrated abstractions. Suknovic's technique is straightforward—by using a brush and masking tape he moves color around in controlled areas. Sometimes the tape has been previously painted and used to create other art works. It then returns to blank paper and creates a new original pictorial concept. Suknovic creates a spectacle of great beauty, in which the painting alternately offers resistance to the eye or pulls the viewer into glowing fields of brilliant depth.

Led by trumpeter and bandleader Steven Bernstein since 1995, Sex Mob is a rare group that has created its own sound, a completely unique language combined with the telepathy that musicians cultivate over years of playing together.
